{"id":90766,"date":"2025-05-10T19:03:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T19:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90766\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T19:03:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T19:03:13","slug":"drop-in-exclusions-from-london-schools-despite-national-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90766\/","title":{"rendered":"Drop in exclusions from London schools despite national rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>There were 245 exclusions in London in the spring term of 2023-24, a decrease on the 259 a year earlier reports Adam Care, Data Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/radarexclusions0525.jpg\" alt=\"The backs of the heads of two schoolchildren looking at a wall with posted and 'Spelling' and 'Maths' spelled out in Scrabble letters\" class=\"wp-image-40660\"  \/>Across England, there were 3,107 permanent exclusions in spring 2024, up 2% on 3,039 in spring 2023 \u2013 (Credit \u2013 Radar)<\/p>\n<p>There were hundreds of permanent exclusions from London schools last year, as new figures show the numbers rose across England.<\/p>\n<p>A teachers\u2019 union warned the rate of suspensions and exclusions was \u201cstill worryingly high\u201d and risks damaging young people\u2019s future prospects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk\/find-statistics\/suspensions-and-permanent-exclusions-in-england\/2023-24-spring-term\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data from the Department for Education shows<\/a> there were 245 exclusions in London in the spring term of 2023-24, a decrease on the 259 a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22967218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">However, across England<\/a>, there were 3,107 permanent exclusions in spring 2024, up 2% on 3,039 in spring 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The rise comes amid warnings of challenging behaviour in classrooms following the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Haines, director of public affairs at the charity Impetus, called the figures \u201ca stark warning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cOur schools are not set up to support the needs of all students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people from disadvantaged backgrounds in particular are four times more likely to be suspended and five times more likely to be excluded than their better-off peers \u2013 with knock-on effects that can impact the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren cannot learn if they are not in school and engaged, so it\u2019s no surprise that young people who are suspended even once are unlikely to pass their GCSE English and maths, and they\u2019re twice as likely to be neither earning nor learning at 24.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the number of suspensions increased from 263,904 to 295,559 over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>In London there were 23,340 temporary school suspensions, an increase on last year, when there were 21,546.<\/p>\n<p>The most common reason for suspensions and permanent exclusions was persistent disruptive behaviour, the DfE said.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Whiteman, general secretary at school leaders\u2019 union NAHT, said: \u201cThe poor behaviour that leads to suspension and exclusion often has causes outside the classroom, with big challenges facing children and families, including poverty, the cost-of-living crisis, accessing wider services for Send support, and some lingering impact of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cSchools can\u2019t do it on their own. To avoid suspension and exclusion, they need funded, specialist help to meet every child\u2019s needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the number of suspensions and permanent exclusions fell from autumn 2023, when there were 346,279 and 4,168 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Permanent exclusions are \u201cgenerally higher\u201d in the autumn term each year compared to the following spring term, the DfE said.<\/p>\n<p>Pepe Di\u2019Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: \u201cYoung people only have one chance at a good education, and leaders and teachers are all too aware that missing out on time in the classroom is damaging to their attainment and future prospects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool leaders only take these serious measures when they have exhausted all other options, and therefore we need to focus on early intervention strategies that provide help to pupils who are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Morgan, minister for early education, said: \u201cSuspensions and permanent exclusions continue to creep up, costing all children and young people \u2013 and those with Send in particular \u2013 precious time at school and hampering their life chances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why, as part of our Plan for Change, we are turning the tide on the underlying causes of poor behaviour by providing access to a specialist mental health professional in every school and ensuring earlier intervention for pupils with Send.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added the roll out of free breakfast clubs in schools would improve children\u2019s \u201cattendance, attainment and behaviour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Independent news outlets like ours \u2013 reporting for the community without rich backers \u2013 are under threat of closure, turning British towns into news deserts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The audiences they serve know less, understand less, and can do less.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If our coverage has helped you understand our community a little bit better, please consider supporting us with a monthly, yearly or one-off donation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose the news.
