{"id":907670,"date":"2026-04-20T23:02:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T23:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/907670\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T23:02:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T23:02:14","slug":"cowardly-eu-opted-for-appeasement-over-defending-rights-amnesty-says-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/907670\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cowardly\u2019 EU opted for appeasement over defending rights, Amnesty says \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU governments have been accused of being cowards for failing to stand up and act in defence of human rights and international law, with only a few notable exceptions, according to Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe era of the predators is on us, and with it, the era of the coward,\u201d Agn\u00e8s Callamard, who heads the NGO, told reporters on Monday (20 April).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of the official launch of Amnesty\u2019s Global Report on Human Rights, published later on Tuesday, Callamard listed US president Donald Trump, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russia\u2019s president Vladimir Putin as among the worst global predators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than confront those predators, the majority of governments, most notably European governments, opted instead for appeasement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome even sought to imitate the bullies and the looters. Others chose silence and ducked for cover.
