Edward Feser, a Catholic professor of philosophy at Pasadena City College, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FeserEdward\/status\/1920574534199226484?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> on X that while the new pope\u2019s theology skewed progressive, he seemed like a more \u201creasonable man [who] might have been talked out of Francis\u2019s more problematic decisions.\u201d Pointedly, Prevost has already met in person with the influential American cardinal Raymond Burke, a hardline Francis critic who consistently complained about the late pope\u2019s efforts to curtail the Tridentine Mass, an older variety of the Latin mass favored by traditionalists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Pope-Leo-XIV-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6587796\"  \/>On paper, Pope Leo seems to stand against almost everything the U.S. president represents. | Vatican\/EFE via EPA<\/p>\n<p>That move has in turn set off unease among some moderates, with one worrying to POLITICO that traditionalists might become a \u201cforce in the Church\u201d after Francis was able to largely reduce their influence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAGA holdouts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But none of that means Prevost will necessarily be able to satisfy the more vehement forces in MAGA world, who have already prejudged him as a subversive leftist after his comments on migration.<\/p>\n<p>After Prevost\u2019s ascension, Laura Loomer, an American far-right political activist and Trump adviser, ranted about the \u201cwoke Marxist pope\u201d and claimed he \u201cis anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,\u201d adding that it\u2019s \u201cgross\u201d that he is now in charge of the Vatican. Notably, Loomer is not Catholic, but Jewish, indicating the importance of the symbolism of the pope even for Washington\u2019s non-believers. <\/p>\n<p>Steve Bannon, Trump\u2019s former chief strategist and an ultraconservative Catholic, said Prevost\u2019s election as the first U.S.-born pontiff had been a vote against his old boss.\u00a0It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/08\/leo-american-pope-worldview-00337247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cthe worst choice for MAGA Catholics<\/a>,\u201d Bannon said, calling the election of Leo XIV \u201can anti-Trump vote by the globalists of the Curia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Cardinal Hollerich, who was close to Francis, said that wasn\u2019t quite right. \u201cWe didn\u2019t elect an anti-Trump, we elected a disciple of Jesus,\u201d he said.
