{"id":90799,"date":"2025-05-10T19:19:21","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T19:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90799\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T19:19:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T19:19:21","slug":"fico-promises-putin-veto-on-eu-russian-energy-ban-novaya-gazeta-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/90799\/","title":{"rendered":"Fico promises Putin veto on EU Russian energy ban \u2014 Novaya Gazeta Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Slovakia\u2019s Prime Minister Robert Fico criticised the European Commission\u2019s position on Russian energy at a meeting with Vladimir Putin on Friday evening, the Kremlin has <a href=\"http:\/\/kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/76888\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"http:\/\/kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/76888\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fico said a decision to cut off energy supplies from Russia could lead to \u201cinstability\u201d and \u201ctechnological problems\u201d. He promised that Slovakia would veto the European Commission proposal should unanimous approval be required for it to pass. \u201cIf they vote by a majority, not unanimously, then the large states will carry the decision,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Alleging that Europe wanted \u201cto build a new iron curtain\u201d and that sanctions against Russia did not work and only damaged the European Union itself, Fico said that Bratislava, by contrast, was \u201cinterested in normal relations with the Russian Federation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the European Commission aims to propose introducing a complete ban on the use of Russian gas and nuclear fuel to be operational by 2027. It will be put to a vote that will have to be approved by a majority of members of the European Parliament and a qualified majority of EU countries, state-affiliated business daily Kommersant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kommersant.ru\/doc\/7710255\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kommersant.ru\/doc\/7710255\">noted<\/a>.
