{"id":909674,"date":"2026-04-21T21:30:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T21:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/909674\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T21:30:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T21:30:14","slug":"ukraine-reopens-damaged-druzhba-pipeline-to-unlock-e90-billion-eu-loan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/909674\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine reopens damaged Druzhba pipeline to unlock \u20ac90 billion EU loan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> has repaired the damaged Druzhba pipeline that carries Russian oil to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/europe\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Europe<\/a> and is ready to resume supplies\u00a0\u2013 unblocking what Kyiv hopes was the last hurdle to securing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20260416-eu-aims-to-start-disbursing-new-ukraine-loan-in-second-quarter\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tens of billions of euros<\/a> in support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/brussels\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brussels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline has been at the centre of a standoff between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/hungary\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hungary<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/slovakia\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Slovakia<\/a>, which still import Russian oil via the pipeline, Ukraine and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv can restart pumping Russian oil to the two EU countries as soon as it gets a formal request, a source in Kyiv told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s outgoing nationalist leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/viktor-orban\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Viktor Orban<\/a> had held up a much-needed \u20ac90 billion ($106 billion) loan for Ukraine as leverage to pressure Kyiv to resume deliveries, accusing it of stalling repairs.<\/p>\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tv-shows\/the-debate\/20260414-end-of-an-era-why-did-hungary-vote-out-far-right-s-orban\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">defeat in elections<\/a> earlier this month was seen as paving the way for the money to be unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ukraine has completed repair work on the section of the Druzhba oil pipeline that was damaged by a Russian strike,&#8221; Zelensky wrote in a statement published on social media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pipeline can resume operation,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\">Read more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20251128-the-fight-over-the-future-of-russia-s-frozen-assets\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Europe needs help funding Ukraine. So why can&#8217;t it agree on using frozen Russian assets?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ukraine said the pipeline was damaged in late January by Russian strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv had vowed to repair it, but Zelensky warned on Tuesday that Moscow&#8217;s forces could attack the pipeline again.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary and Slovakia \u2013 among the most Kremlin-sympathetic EU member states \u2013\u00a0had accused Kyiv of dragging its feet over the repairs.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky has made no secret of his staunch opposition to the fact that some EU members still buy Russian oil and gas\u00a0\u2013 a key source of revenue for Moscow to fund its invasion launched more than four years ago.<\/p>\n<p> Ukraine urges more Russia sanctions <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after confirming repairs had been complete, Zelensky spoke with EU Commission chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> over the fate of the long-delayed 90-billion-euro loan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important that we begin receiving them soon. All necessary steps on Ukraine&#8217;s side have been taken,&#8221; he said on social media after the call.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to reporters in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/luxembourg\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luxembourg<\/a>, EU foreign policy chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/kaja-kallas\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kaja Kallas<\/a> said: &#8220;We expect an agreement in 24 hours. So I don&#8217;t want to jinx it. I hope that everything goes well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully all the obstacles are removed,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>A source in Zelensky&#8217;s office said Kyiv could start pumping oil immediately.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a technical matter \u2013\u00a0once there is a request for pumping, it will start working,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv has also stepped up its aerial attacks on Russian energy sites in recent months with the aim of bleeding Russian exports \u2013\u00a0an effort Kyiv refers to as its own &#8220;long-range sanctions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\">Read more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20251203-sinking-russia-s-shadow-fleet-has-the-ukraine-war-spread-to-senegal\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sinking Russia\u2019s \u2018shadow fleet\u2019: Has the Ukraine war reached Senegal?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kyiv needs the EU funds to plug looming holes in its budget, but has managed to secure enough money from other backers while Budapest stalled the loan.<\/p>\n<p>The bloc&#8217;s 27 members need to unanimously approve an amendment to its budget to get the loan going.<\/p>\n<p>EU chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/antonio-costa\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Antonio Costa<\/a> welcomed Zelensky&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you President (Zelensky) for delivering, as agreed: repairing the Druzhba pipeline and restoring its operation,&#8221; he said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Despite announcing the reopening of the pipeline, Zelensky called on Ukraine&#8217;s allies to step up sanctions on Moscow and to source new energy suppliers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\">Watch more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/how-do-shadow-fleets-work-us-seizes-two-sencented-oil-tankers\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">How do shadow fleets work?
