Liverpool need to bolster their midfield this summer, and Fabinho on a free transfer represents smart business. Here\u2019s why. <\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s almost three years since the Brazilian left Anfield<\/a>, and he has yet to be properly replaced by FSG. Liverpool need a profile like Fabinho<\/a>, and have been eyeing up moves for some of the best defensive-minded midfielders in Europe. <\/p>\n

But at 32, he could still make an impact for the Reds. He\u2019s in the national team picture ahead of the World Cup and was instrumental in Al-Ittihad\u2019s title win last season. Not only that, but he fills a glaring need for Arne Slot<\/a>. <\/p>\n

I was actually quite surprised to discover that Fabinho is still only 32 years old. He was a mainstay at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp<\/a>, offering unmatched protection to the Liverpool back line. <\/p>\n

In five seasons at the club, he won the Premier League and Champions League during an era of dominance under the German coach. <\/p>\n

If he were to return, it would not be to take up a similarly prominent role. Rather, it\u2019s a financially friendly way of adding depth to the midfield unit \u2014 a steady, reliable squad option. <\/p>\n

Not only that, Fabinho\u2019s experience and pedigree at Liverpool would be a welcome addition. Liverpool are losing Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson<\/a> at the end of the season, which is sure to leave a void in the dressing room. <\/p>\n

As someone who has won it all in a red shirt, Fabinho\u2019s value as a senior figure would help ease the leadership concerns that are brewing at the club. <\/p>\n

Slot could use him in a similar way to Wataru Endo during last season\u2019s title run, bringing him on to see out games and starting him when rotation is called for. <\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a long-term move. We\u2019re talking about a two-year contract to have him as a stop-gap between the current midfield unit and the one Liverpool<\/a> are trying to build for the future. <\/p>\n

A potential sticking point is with the Brazilian\u2019s wages. As with many stars in the Saudi Pro League, Fabinho<\/a> earns a huge weekly wage (approx \u00a3260,000 per week), which would have to be cut drastically for this move to make sense. <\/p>\n

It would depend then, on whether he would take the hit to return to the club where he made his career for one last dance. <\/p>\n
