Patients report what\u2019s being called an emotional flattening<\/a> around things that they used to enjoy, such as romance, exercise, music and socializing, which is being labeled \u201cOzempic Personality.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those suffering from it report losing their motivation to do anything, their drive,\u00a0as well as their ability to enjoy life. Researchers believe that it could be linked\u00a0to how GLP-1 medications<\/a> influence dopamine.<\/p>\n

Dopamine is the chemical in our brain that\u00a0makes rewards feel valuable. It gives us the motivation to do something when we\u2019re feeling\u00a0pleasure. <\/p>\n

Dr. Drew: \u2018Priorities sink away\u2019 with \u2018Ozempic personality\u2019<\/p>\n

Dr. Drew joined \u201cBatya<\/a>!\u201d to discuss why he believes it is not a personality change, but instead, a motivational change.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to understand, the brain\u00a0has fundamentally two systems, a liking system and a wanting system. If you do these things, like eating or romance or going to\u00a0work, you\u2019ll still like it, you just don\u2019t want to do it,\u201d he told NewsNation.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThat wanting part that\u00a0is part of the reward system, the drive system that is the opposite of addiction, where literally\u00a0when you see addiction, one priority emerges and all the other priorities sink away. In this case,\u00a0all the priorities flatten away and you don\u2019t want to want these things,\u00a0even though you still like them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Drew believes while some health benefits can be clear, caution should be exercised in the use of Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe excessive enthusiasm for these drugs is what scares me more than anything.\u00a0I\u2019ve seen very serious medical complications, including death. I\u2019ve seen this apathy develop that can be destructive to people\u2019s lives. They don\u2019t go to work. They\u2019re\u00a0not interested in their spouses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not interested in their children. The things that\u00a0usually interest them are just not that interesting anymore.
