{"id":91136,"date":"2025-05-10T22:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T22:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/91136\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T22:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T22:18:11","slug":"badenoch-tells-eu-she-would-reverse-labours-post-brexit-reset-if-uk-damaged-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/91136\/","title":{"rendered":"Badenoch tells EU she would reverse Labour\u2019s post-Brexit reset if UK \u2018damaged\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The May 19 meeting is likely to be the first in a series of annual summits between the UK and the EU, and comes as ministers are looking to reset relations with Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Mr Serrano, dated on Friday, Mrs Badenoch described Brexit as a \u201cdefining moment for our nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She laid out five tests that the Conservative Party has when it comes to the UK\u2019s relationship with the EU, including \u201cno backsliding on free movement or compulsory asylum transfers\u201d and \u201cno new money\u201d being paid to the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>She would also want to see \u201cno reduction\u201d in the UK\u2019s fishing rights and no \u201cEuropean Court jurisdiction\u201d as well as \u201cno compromise on the primacy of Nato as the cornerstone of European security\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Badenoch explained: \u201cIt is important that I stress that the next Conservative government under my leadership would not remain bound by terms that failed the five tests set out above, and damaged the interests of the United Kingdom and its people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would take back any legislative or judicial powers handed over to the EU by the present government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Conservative spokesman said that Sir Keir is \u201cclearly gearing up to hand over the freedoms we won through Brexit just to be in Brussels\u2019 good books\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman added: \u201cKemi hopes that pledging to reverse Starmer\u2019s EU surrender will send a clear signal to the EU that any lop-sided deal they sign with Labour isn\u2019t worth the paper it\u2019s written on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Sir Keir told the Guardian that he is \u201cambitious\u201d about what could be achieved with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a closer relationship on security, on defence, on trade and on the economy,\u201d he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>A Labour source said that Mrs Badenoch \u201cspent her time as Trade Secretary picking fights and alienating our allies rather than doing deals that put money in working people\u2019s pockets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They added: \u201cNow she is seeking to pre-judge a future deal that hasn\u2019t even been agreed yet and would only be made if it was in the British national interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Labour government is getting on with delivering on the mandate we were given last July to build a strategic partnership with European partners to deliver an improved deal in the national interest.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The May 19 meeting is likely to be the first in a series of annual summits between the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":91137,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5226],"tags":[802,748,2000,299,5187,1699,4884,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-91136","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-brexit","8":"tag-brexit","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-eu","11":"tag-europe","12":"tag-european","13":"tag-european-union","14":"tag-great-britain","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114485861187096701","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91136","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=91136"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91136\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/91137"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=91136"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=91136"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=91136"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
