Future electric Porsche sports cars could be fitted with simulated gearboxes because they can boost the \u201cfun\u201d of driving an EV, the boss of the firm\u2019s GT division has told Autocar.<\/p>\n

Andreas Preuninger said that when he drove the electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 N<\/a>, the level of realism provided by its simulated \u2019box was \u201cvery impressive\u201d and his \u201cbiggest takeaway\u201d of driving the 601bhp EV.<\/p>\n

Hyundai\u2019s system uses a \u2018fake\u2019 rev range to deliver power in a similar way to a traditional combustion car and paddles behind the steering wheel can be used to change gears. Sounds that simulate a revving engine are also pumped into the cabin.<\/p>\n

Preuninger said the Hyundai\u2019s unique engine simulation and the feeling it provides in tandem with the car\u2019s natural-feeling controls were key to a performance EV\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

He hinted that such a system combined with Porsche steering and brake pedal feel could create a highly engaging car.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe [Porsche GT] are automotive nerds and discussions about how to improve driving engagement are always happening,\u201d he said. \u201cDiscussions are often intense as everybody\u2019s got an opinion, but that only provokes innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preuninger\u2019s comments contrast with those recently made to Autocar by Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann, who suggested his brand wasn\u2019t interested in developing a similar system<\/a>. He said: \u201cYou don\u2019t want something which is not real.
