{"id":913640,"date":"2026-04-23T16:53:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/913640\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T16:53:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:53:29","slug":"residents-still-homeless-after-evacuation-from-dangerous-sheffield-flats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/913640\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents still homeless after evacuation from dangerous Sheffield flats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents are still without access to their homes after firefighters evacuated a block of flats in Sheffield over safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Occupants of the Riverside House building on Mowbray Street in Sheffield received prohibition notices from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service forcing them out of their homes on Wednesday 15th April.<\/p>\n<p>Residents were only allowed to enter briefly to collect their possessions before they were evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>Inspectors said the apartments, managed by Barnsdales, were a safety risk because the sprinklers were not working.<\/p>\n<p>Green Party Councillor Douglas Johnson criticised the company, saying: \u201cI think it\u2019s awful and it does make me angry at how dismissive these agents can be when they\u2019re dealing with people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re very cavalier in their attitudes, it\u2019s completely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"70257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70257\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"70258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"A peice of paper detailing the fact that residents of the flats must evacuate\" class=\"wp-image-70258\"\/>The notice given to residents evacuated<\/p>\n<p>ITV reported that Barnsdales have offered residents only \u00a360 per night to cover emergency accommodation and meals.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: \u201cOn Wednesday 15th April 2026, business fire safety inspectors served a Prohibition Notice on Riverside Apartments on Mowbray Street, Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notice prohibits sleeping within the residential flats at any time due to inadequate means of escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will remain in force until the matters are remedied and the notice is withdrawn.
