{"id":9168,"date":"2025-04-10T22:29:14","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T22:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/9168\/"},"modified":"2025-04-10T22:29:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T22:29:14","slug":"uks-trump-tariff-reprieve-nothing-to-do-with-brexit-says-david-lammy-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/9168\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s Trump tariff reprieve \u2018nothing to do with Brexit,\u2019 says David Lammy \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign Secretary David Lammy \u2014 a long-standing supporter of staying in the bloc \u2013 challenged that view in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repubblica.it\/esteri\/2025\/04\/07\/news\/lammy_intervista_accompagnatore_carlo_camilla_italia-424111117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian newspaper la Repubblica<\/a>, instead talking up Britain\u2019s negotiating nous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are facing a significant change in the way the global trading system works, but it has nothing to do with Brexit,\u201d Lammy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repubblica.it\/esteri\/2025\/04\/07\/news\/lammy_intervista_accompagnatore_carlo_camilla_italia-424111117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe have been working intensively in recent weeks on a negotiation for a broader economic agreement with the United States, and these negotiations will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foreign secretary\u2019s comments put him at odds with Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones, who on Sunday said when questioned by Sky News that the lower tariffs represented a benefit of Brexit. \u201cIt is, there\u2019s one,\u201d the former Remain campaigner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/sunday-crunch\/its-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Sky News Sunday<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve struggled to find one in the past but there is one we\u2019ve ended up with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. government has so far ruled out imposing retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. and continues to push for a trade agreement that might soften the blow of Trump\u2019s levies.
