David Moyes was disappointed with Stuart Attwell and VAR\u2019s decision not to award Everton a penalty against West Ham.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everton appealed for a penalty late in the second half when Mateus Fernandes<\/a> handled the ball in the 18-yard box.<\/p>\n

While grappling with Toffees striker Thierno Barry from behind, Fernandes accidentally punched the ball away from his control.<\/p>\n

Former Premier League<\/a> referee Mark Clattenburg has since shut down Moyes\u2019 passionate complaints about the decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The VAR decided not to award a penalty to Everton as there was \u201cno intent\u201d from Fernandes to handle the ball.<\/p>\n

The West Ham midfielder was merely grappling with Barry, but Moyes<\/a> pointed out that it was not a 50:50 battle.<\/p>\n

Barry was fully focused on trying to control the ball and had it taken away from him by Fernandes\u2019 hand, regardless of intent.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe puts two hands around him. It wasn\u2019t as if his hand was there and the ball came up and hit it,\u201d Moyes explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe reacted and he punched the ball, so I\u2019m amazed that they\u2019ve not given a penalty kick for it. It would have been harsh on them, but I\u2019m amazed.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Clattenburg shared the VAR\u2019s opinion, disagreeing with Moyes that it should have been a penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been harsh to punish West Ham\u2019s midfielder Fernandes for a handball when the ball touched his hand,\u201d Clattenburg told GRV Media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe midfielder does not try to touch the ball with his hand while fighting for the ball with an Everton forward. The best decision was to play on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fernandes was certainly fortunate to get away with a clear handball, especially when it took the ball away from an Everton player.<\/p>\n

But after Clattenburg reinforced the referee\u2019s decision (which he doesn\u2019t always do), this suggests that the right call was made.<\/p>\n

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also scored minutes later anyway, which may not have happened if a penalty had been awarded.<\/p>\n
