{"id":91973,"date":"2025-05-11T05:48:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T05:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/91973\/"},"modified":"2025-05-11T05:48:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T05:48:14","slug":"ali-frances-election-isnt-just-a-boon-for-labor-its-big-for-the-disability-community-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/91973\/","title":{"rendered":"Ali France&#8217;s election isn&#8217;t just a boon for Labor \u2014 it&#8217;s big for the disability community too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ali France couldn&#8217;t be prouder of her two best friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They give her support and are an extension of herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My first best friend is my prosthetic leg and my second is my wheelchair,&#8221; she told ABC NEWS this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a matter of weeks, Ms France and her two best friends will enter the House of Representatives with pride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of my leg,&#8221; she said, sitting on a park bench with titanium ankle crossed over human knee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s also clear that she&#8217;s proud to be the new MP for the Queensland seat of Dickson and proud of doing it as a woman with disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms France&#8217;s victory in last week&#8217;s election brought much excitement to the disability community, but the excitement had nothing to do with party politics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-03\/ali-france-wins-dickson-against-dutton\/105247972\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who is Ali France?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Labor&#8217;s Ali France has toppled Opposition Leader Peter Dutton in his seat of Dickson. It was the former journalist and para-athlete&#8217;s third time running in the seat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Underestimated and pitied&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are 5.5 million Australians living with disability. That&#8217;s 20 per cent of the population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For many of them, life can be challenging, not because of their disability but because of the world simply not being built for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-02-25\/transport-failing-people-with-disability\/103314206\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103314206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transport<\/a> and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-08-06\/advocates-nsw-standards-residential-building-disabilities\/104179526\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104179526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">housing<\/a> are often not accessible and people with disability continue to experience discrimination in every aspect of their lives including employment, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-26\/intellectual-disability-health-inequality\/104937474\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104937474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> and education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s hard to understand what that&#8217;s like unless you&#8217;ve experienced it yourself.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A white woman with long brown hair standing in a park|\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/7d3f993c9df4aea313eb71569510f388\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ali France says she was &#8220;underestimated&#8221; and &#8220;pitied&#8221; when she returned to work with a disability. (ABC NEWS: Mary Lloyd)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But anyone can be impacted by disability at any point \u2014 something Ms France knows, having lost her leg in a car accident 14 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Before that, Ms France said she was &#8220;completely na\u00efve&#8221; to the issues people with disability face every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Even with a decades-long career in journalism and public relations under her belt, returning to her job after having a leg amputated was a struggle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I [was] underestimated, pitied \u2026 it was really difficult,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Taking up canoeing as a para-athlete helped restore her confidence.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;[I needed to] demonstrate that I was still capable,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.Disability community excited<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When Ms France starts in Canberra, she&#8217;ll be part of a small cohort of federal parliamentarians who live with disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Greens&#8217; Jordon Steele-John, who lives with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, entered the Senate in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There might&#8217;ve been others, but few with a visible presence. It&#8217;s important we respect everyone&#8217;s choice to disclose or not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it&#8217;s that visibility advocate Elly Desmarchelier \u2014 who doorknocked for Ms France during her election campaign \u2014 said would prove powerful.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about being seen,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s in little girls being able to look up at the TV and see a disabled woman in parliament and it being a totally normal thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A white woman with long brown hair and a prosthetic leg sitting on a park bench\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/4a0098ef42ae94fe1dc4084248e8650d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The visibility of Ali France&#8217;s disability will be a powerful thing to see in parliament, disability advocates say. (ABC NEWS: Mary Lloyd)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms France is almost certainly also the first member of a federal government to be a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Nic Avery, from NDIS advocacy organisation Every Australian Counts, said having Ms France sharing her unique perspective at such a high level would be invaluable.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We need to have the voices of people with disability in our parliament where decisions are made about us,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Lived experience is the difference between hearing that something is difficult and having experienced those barriers yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There&#8217;s a lot for the new Albanese government to do for Australians with disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Among them are restoring trust in, and the sustainability of, the NDIS, as well as negotiating with the states and territories on the rollout of the much-anticipated<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-01\/ndis-foundational-supports-analysis\/104824444\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104824444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> foundational supports<\/a> for those outside the scheme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-22\/federal-election-2025-disability-issues\/105165312\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three big disability issues the next government needs to address<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">On the eve of a new parliament, these are three areas disability advocates want addressed, write Evan Young and Nas Campanella.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Avery said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-10-01\/ndis-changes-section-10-list-explained\/104313864\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104313864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changes to the NDIS <\/a>introduced last year were done without proper consultation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She believes having another disabled voice in parliament will make a difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We really need the opportunity for the government to work with us,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Ms Desmarchelier argues it&#8217;s not Ms France&#8217;s job to fix the NDIS and suggestions from some in the community that she should be given that portfolio is an unfair expectation of a first term MP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That conversation is backwards,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;All policy is disability policy \u2026 and when we make the NDIS minister the go-to on disability we are making ourselves smaller in the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not an &#8216;inspiration&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Ms France said disability issues will always be a focus, being her authentic self in serving the people of Dickson is her number one priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s lots of people in my community who&#8217;ve already spoken to me about their ideas and thoughts about the NDIS and I want people to always know that that is a passion of mine,&#8221;
