A family therapist is weighing in on why King Charles III<\/strong><\/a> and Prince Harry<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s rift is a heartbreaking circumstance.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a mental health professional, it’s a tragedy when the public perception takes precedence over the private relationship,\u201d Dr. Gail Saltz<\/strong> exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, May 9. \u201cHarry and William are the only brothers they\u2019ll ever have. Charles is the only father Harry will ever have. These are essential human relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Dr. Saltz is not affiliated with the royals, the medical professional is hopeful the family can \u201cprivately talk about what they want in a relationship moving forward.\u201d However, Charles, 76, and Harry\u2019s public figure statuses have an impact on making that happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two different relationship lines here,\u201d she explained. \u201cThere’s the public one because they are a working family, a royal family with a historical and tabloid place. And then there’s the private family relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Saltz, who is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, added that given the royal family\u2019s status, it can be \u201chard to see how valued the private [relationship] is\u201d due to the \u201cstrict rules\u201d for the public side of the group\u2019s dynamic.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorically, if you break those professional rules, you\u2019re out,\u201d she said. \u201cPart of the rules is that you don\u2019t air dirty laundry or talk publicly about anything negative.\u201d<\/p>\n

While most families can\u2019t relate to some of the royal family\u2019s issues, the dynamic can be \u201cmirrored\u201d to some who experience estrangement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s very relatable. Unfortunately, many families go through estrangement,\u201d she shared. \u201cSiblings become estranged, parent-child relationships become estranged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince Harry Calls on King Charles to Reconcile: \u2018Don\u2019t Know How Much Longer My Father Has\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

In Dr. Saltz\u2019s experience, she typically advocates \u201cfor doing everything possible to avoid estrangement.\u201d The only exception comes in \u201csituations of abuse\u201d or \u201ctoxically destructive\u201d relationships. As for how to reconnect, Dr. Saltz advised that the parties focus on what\u2019s ahead rather than dwell on the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s hard enough for families who are estranged,\u201d she told Us. \u201cIdeally, they would sit down and talk about what\u2019s possible for the future, not just rehash the past. Harry could say, \u2018Can we meet? Can we talk?\u2019 King Charles likely won’t say much publicly. But can they talk privately? Express feelings like \u2018I miss you\u2019 and \u2018I’m sorry for how I hurt you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles and Harry\u2019s strained bond<\/a> worsened in 2020 when the Duke of Sussex, 40, stepped down as a working member of the royal family alongside his wife, Meghan Markle<\/strong>. Tensions escalated after Harry and Meghan, 42, publicly spoke out about their experiences with the royal family on numerous occasions.<\/p>\n

Prince Harry\u2019s \u2018Upsetting\u2019 Comments About King Charles\u2019 Cancer Likely Worsened Their Feud: Royal Expert<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite his remarks on where he stands with his family, Harry has been candid about wanting to reconcile with his father. In a recent interview, Harry admitted he wants to mend things since he does not know how much longer<\/a> Charles will be around amid his battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love reconciliation with my family. There\u2019s no point in continuing to fight anymore,\u201d Harry told BBC in May. \u201cLife is precious. I don\u2019t know how much longer my father has.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harry also claimed that the monarch \u201cwon\u2019t speak\u201d to him<\/a> amid his recent legal battle<\/a> to get back his and Meghan\u2019s government-funded security. (The couple lost their security access when they stepped back from the royal family.)<\/p>\n

Harry appeared in court in April to appeal a 2024 decision.
