LONDON, April 10 \u2014 The much-anticipated British television series \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d returns to Netflix today for a seventh season, promising to immerse fans once again in its iconic, dystopian worlds replete with futuristic technology.<\/p>\n
After a two-year wait, the award-winning series, created by British writer Charlie Brooker, will air six new episodes, including a sequel to the fourth season\u2019s \u201cUSS Callister\u201d episode \u2014 a space epic inspired by the Star Trek universe.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a few episodes that are quite unpleasant,\u201d Brooker told AFP last month at a festival in the northern French city of Lille.<\/p>\n
He added they were more like the \u201cOG (original) Black Mirror\u201d, referring to the earlier seasons which often explored disturbing scenarios driven by technology.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s quite a lot of emotional ones (episodes)… So, it\u2019s a mix, which is kind of what you\u2019d expect from Black Mirror, of the familiar and the unexpected,\u201d added Brooker.<\/p>\n
Some of the episodes are, ironically, dripping in nostalgia, exploring technology that could allow you to relive a memory by entering an old photograph, or recreate a black-and-white film using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
Fans will see actors Paul Giamatti (\u201cThe Holdovers\u201d), Rashida Jones (\u201cParks and Recreation\u201d), Issa Rae (\u201cInsecure\u201d) and Emma Corrin (\u201cThe Crown\u201d) on their screen through the season.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The cult series, which has nine Emmy awards to its name, first aired on UK\u2019s Channel 4 between 2011 and 2014, before moving to Netflix in 2016 and winning global acclaim.<\/p>\n
The previous season, written during the Covid-19 pandemic at a time when Brooker said he was \u201csick of technology\u201d, was more gory and supernatural than older seasons, the writer said in a press release.<\/p>\n
The seventh season should appeal to long-time fans, thanks to its return to \u201c\u2018OG Black Mirror\u2019 and the near-future tech themes, with the satirical undercurrent and social commentary sprinkled on top,\u201d said Brooker.<\/p>\n
It is a recipe for success that the season, often praised for its prescience, swiftly reprises in the disturbing first episode called \u201cCommon People\u201d.<\/p>\n
The episode tells the story of a woman saved by miraculous medical technology that her husband signs up to, but which gradually consumes the couple with its cynical subscription-based model.<\/p>\n
The series shows how technology itself is \u201cnot evil or malicious\u201d, Brooker told AFP in Lille.<\/p>\n
\u201cOften the humans involved in the stories aren\u2019t necessarily malicious, but there\u2019s a clumsiness.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a way, we\u2019re the problem,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
