It’s not just the week days either. On the last weekend of every month, the regular Makers Market attracts those from neighbouring suburbs and further afield, cementing the strong sense of identity and community which permeates from the east to west of this affluent and in-demand suburb.<\/p>\n

The arrival of the railways and Manchester’s rapid industrial growth brought about new development, and by the early 1900s, it had become part of the city. It’s evolved significantly since then and has become increasingly popular with young professionals looking for somewhere to rent, and with families putting down roots.<\/p>\n Burton Road in Didsbury (Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n In March, Didsbury was named one of the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday Times<\/a>. Five locations in the North West were selected by the publication as part of its wider guide, all showcasing ‘the best of Britain’.<\/p>\n Alongside Altrincham<\/a>, Didsbury is flying the flag for Greater Manchester with its ‘chummy neighbours, summer festivals and legendary kids\u2019 football club, Fletcher Moss Rangers’. Described as ‘stylish, safe and yes, a little bit smug in parts’, the guide reiterated much of what we know already know about Didsbury.<\/p>\n Renowned for its independent shops, strong hospitality offer and strong community feel, it’s hardly surprising that it has made the cut. While West Didsbury is home to its lively food and drink scene and Victorian architecture, East Didsbury is a little more residential with tree-lined streets and access to great schools.<\/p>\n West Didsbury has a number of independent restaurants, bars and cafes(Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n It’s also extremely well connected with strong transport links including multiple tram stops, bus routes and train stations – making it ideal for commuting into the city centre but also around the wider region too. There’s a lot to like, but as you might expect, it comes with a price tag to match.<\/p>\n According to Rightmove, as of March 2026, the average monthly rental payment in Didsbury was \u00a31,595. In terms of prices, Didsbury has an overall average of \u00a3413,178 over the last year.<\/p>\n The vast majority of properties sold in Didsbury during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of \u00a3268,430. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of \u00a3526,259, with terraced properties fetching \u00a3476,434.<\/p>\n Rustik in West Didsbury (Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n This tracks with what Tom Bell, Branch Manager at Julian Wadden estate agents in the village is seeing too in terms of types of properties available and the range in prices. Across Didsbury Village, East Didsbury and West Didsbury prices vary but there is a mix of period houses, Victorian and Edwardian terraces, modern apartments, and semi-detached homes.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a very high demand to be here – when people move to Manchester it\u2019s one of the first places they gravitate to,” he says.<\/p>\n “Sometimes they realise how expensive it is to live here and maybe go a little further afield, but it\u2019s certainly one of the first ports of call specifically in south Manchester.<\/p>\n Didsbury was named one of the Sunday Times’ Best Place to Live in the UK for 2026(Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n \u201cOther areas give you more house for your money, and in this area you\u2019re not expecting to see great big gardens because of the age of the properties. Sales wise we have a lot first-time-buyers, we sell a lot of apartments, a lot of conversions on Palatine Road.<\/p>\n “There’s a lot of one-and-two-bedroom apartments too, but you can go all the way through the housing market in Didsbury with two-bedroom semis, two-bedroom terraces, all the way up to the five and six bedroom properties so there\u2019s a really varied stock. People can live here throughout their lives.<\/p>\n \u201cThe price can vary massively though, a two-bedroom apartment can start at \u00a3250,000 and go up to \u00a3400,000 or \u00a3500,000 depending on location. You get a bit more for your money in East Didsbury. It remains a very resilient market and that\u2019s because it\u2019s very popular.\u201d<\/p>\n Didsbury Park(Image: Liv Clarke)<\/p>\n In terms of what attracts buyers, he has a few thoughts too. \u201cCertainly the proximity to hospitals, we deal with a lot of doctors so that\u2019s important for them to be close to those.<\/p>\n “Then there’s the style of property, we\u2019ve got a lot of older properties, Victorian and Edwardian stock which is very appealing to people who want to live in this area. Schools are also key, there\u2019s really good schools in this area.<\/p>\n “But really one of the most important aspects is the proximity to Manchester city centre<\/a>, transport links are essential. It\u2019s just not missing anything at all, it\u2019s got lovely green parks, independent shops, good restaurants and nightlife. It\u2019s quite fashionable as well which helps.\u201d<\/p>\n Shops along Burton Road (Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n Simon Yarwood, who owns and runs Epicurean, a speciality beer shop on Burton Road in West Didsbury, says he considered moving away 5-6 years ago but is so glad he didn’t. “We\u2019ve got friends that did move away, regretted it, and now they\u2019ve priced themselves out so they can\u2019t afford to move back,” he tells us.<\/p>\n As to what makes it such appealing place to live and work, he puts it down to one central pillar. \u201cIt\u2019s very much the community, especially in West Didsbury. It\u2019s all independent and every one pulls together.<\/p>\n “I\u2019ve lived in Didsbury for 20 years. Some people refer to it as the Notting Hill of the North, and it’s still a leafy suburb with the community feel, and then people come out for an afternoon or evening out on Burton Road.<\/p>\n Simon Yarwood owns Epicurean(Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n \u201cThe majority of our customers are local, and I\u2019ve got to know a lot of them to the extent that two or three of my lifelong friends I met through them being customers in the shop 10-12 years ago. We do get what we call \u201ctourists\u201d at the weekend, especially on the last weekend of the month for the Makers Markets – it is a bit of a destination.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Christmas<\/a> light turn on is a big one for us too, it epitomises the community spirit – the street gets closed for four or five hours. It\u2019s wonderful. There’s a local residents association, schools, choirs, DJs, it\u2019s just a great atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are fortunate that it\u2019s an affluent area, but we\u2019re not bulletproof when it comes to business, people will come in, see it\u2019s 30p or 40p dearer than in Co-op, because they\u2019re now branching into our products, but they\u2019ll still buy but they want to support us and they don\u2019t want chains here, but there is that breaking point where people think they have to think about their pocket rather than loyalty.”<\/p>\n Further down the road is Steranko, a clothing store established on the road in 1991. Owner Dean lives in Stretford<\/a> but is well placed to explain what makes the so attractive to buyers and visitors.<\/p>\n People enjoy the sun in Didsbury(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n “It is quite an affluent neighborhood, reflected in the price of houses, but Didsbury is a jewel in south Manchester, there\u2019s no doubt about it,” he enthuses.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s got great green spaces, a brilliant community, but it could do with more retail, but that\u2019s the same nationwide. It\u2019s funny, people say \u2018what we really need is a butcher or a fishmonger\u2019 and for that person to do that they need to know they can make money.<\/p>\n \u201cAbout 70% of our customers are local, so Didsbury, Chorlton<\/a>, The Heatons, and then the rest travel to us. A lot comes for the markets too and then on a day like today there\u2019s not a nicer road to have a walk down and a coffee, or something stronger.”<\/p>\n A reoccurring theme as we walk along Burton Road and back to the Village is the price of living in Didsbury. My wife and I rented in Chorlton but to buy the house we wanted we moved to Stretford which was a great decision for us,” adds Dean.<\/p>\n “I don\u2019t know if this is true or not but I believe that when the BBC<\/a> were moving up to Salford<\/a> there was a brochure with a few places it suggested to live and amongst those were Didsbury and Knutsford and maybe around Cheadle<\/a>, so we did find and influx of professionals around that time, coupled with the tram coming to Didsbury, it was the perfect storm.<\/p>\n “There was a hospital at the back which got made into flats too so suddenly the community grew exponentially. Didsbury is a great place to live, you couldn\u2019t pick many places that are better in Manchester though.”<\/p>\n Someone else who has been here for more than three decades is Lee, who runs G.T. Blagg, a hardware shop on the corner of Burton Road. The shop dates back to 1871 and Lee took it over 35 years ago.<\/p>\n Lee has run G.T. You do find that there\u2019s more restaurants and takeaways, but I do hope there won\u2019t be any vape shops along here.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s such a friendly place to live really, it\u2019s quite premium. There was a housing boom some 15 years ago where they built lots of new properties that made it very attractive.<\/p>\n “There weren’t so many families but today it is and the schools expanded too and the population has grown. It\u2019s totally different in the evening too – it\u2019s bustling. Also helps when the sun is out.”<\/p>\n Colleagues Hayley and Alice work along Burton Road and are making the most of their lunch break in the sunshine. Even though they come to Didsbury for work and on weekends for a drink and something to eat, they say it is out of their price range compared to other areas of Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n Alice and Hayley (Image: Sean Hansford | Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n \u201cWe actually like going for a drink on a Friday after work here, there’s a lot of nice places to eat,” says Alice who lives in the city centre.<\/p>\n “I would come from town on a weekend to eat and drink here. Because I live in town this feels like a nicer place to come out as well, you get a bit of greenery and I really like spending time here – it sort of has a similar vibe to Stockport<\/a> which is up and coming too.<\/p>\n “If I could choose to live around here I would, but absolutely not, it\u2019s not affordable. I would say places like Prestwich<\/a> were seen as affordable at one point but even that\u2019s getting more expensive because people can’t afford Didsbury and they look elsewhere like Stockport or further afield.”<\/p>\n![\"Burton](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1_220426didsbury12.jpg\")
