{"id":923651,"date":"2026-04-28T08:20:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T08:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/923651\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T08:20:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T08:20:17","slug":"european-markets-stoxx-600-ftse-dax-cac-iran-latest-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/923651\/","title":{"rendered":"European markets: Stoxx 600, FTSE, DAX, CAC, Iran latest news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 European stocks edged lower on Tuesday as investors await Washington&#8217;s response to Iranian peace proposals and react to earnings reports from several regional companies.<\/p>\n<p>The pan-European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.STOXX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stoxx 600<\/a> was 0.1% lower shortly after trading began, as oil prices ticked higher in early dealmaking.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTSE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE 100<\/a> index was down 0.1% at 8:10 a.m. in London (3:10 a.m. E.T.), with Germany&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.GDAXI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DAX<\/a> sliding 0.2%, France&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FCHI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CAC 40<\/a>\u00a0down 0.3%. Italy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTMIB\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE MIB<\/a> was up 0.5%, however.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVS\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novartis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AIR-FR\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Airbus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BCS\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barclays<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays shares fell 2.7% after the U.K. lender revealed it took a \u00a3200 million ($270 million) private credit-related hit resulting from exposure to stricken property lender Market Financial Solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. lender on Tuesday reported a pre-tax profit of \u00a32.81 billion for the first quarter, up 3% on last year&#8217;s \u00a32.72 billion. Its CET1 ratio was 14.1%. It also announced a \u00a3500 million share buyback to follow an ongoing \u00a31 billion program upon completed. Overall, Barclays intends to return more than \u00a315 billion of capital to shareholders between 2026 and 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Investors will be assessing the news that U.S. President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and his national security team discussed Iran&#8217;s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. lifts its blockade and the war ends, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal would postpone negotiations on Tehran&#8217;s nuclear ambitions for a later date,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/27\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-nuclear-talks-proposal-pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Axios<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-27-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0reported earlier in the session.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear whether Trump, who has vowed not to lift the blockade until a deal with Iran is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116420275523158052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">100% complete<\/a>,&#8221; entertained the reported offer to end the two-month-old war. Oil prices edged higher overnight as uncertainty lingered over the outcome of the war.<\/p>\n<p>In corporate news, German biotechnology giant <a id=\"107176565\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/\" type=\"security\" brand=\"cnbc\" section=\"[object Object]\" contentclassification=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bayer<\/a> went before the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday in a bid to bring thousands of lawsuits against its herbicide Roundup to an end. <\/p>\n<p>Bayer acquired Roundup maker Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018 and has faced years of litigation since the deal was completed, amid claims that glyphosate, an ingredient in the weedkiller, has been the cause of health issues, including cancer. <\/p>\n<p>Justices were reportedly divided after hearing arguments in Monday&#8217;s hearing, during which Bayer laid out its appeal against a Missouri court&#8217;s award of $1.25 million to a man who said years of exposure to Roundup were behind his non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis. <\/p>\n<p>Activists for the &#8220;Make America Healthy Again,&#8221; or MAHA, movement, gathered outside the court on Monday to protest against Bayer. <\/p>\n<p>Swiss drugmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVS\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novartis<\/a> reported its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday, with group operating income dropping 12% on an annual basis to $4.9 billion. <\/p>\n<p>It fell below the $5.3 billion expected by analysts polled by LSEG. <\/p>\n<p>British oil major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BP<\/a> also reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/28\/bp-q1-earnings-oil-energy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first-quarter earnings<\/a> on Tuesday, with the company&#8217;s profits for the quarter more than doubling and beating expectations. <\/p>\n<p>Global market attention will also be focusing on central banks this week, with the U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England all due to hold pivotal meetings as the war upends inflation and growth expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed&#8217;s policy decision on Wednesday could mark Jerome Powell&#8217;s final meeting as chair before Kevin Warsh is expected to take over in May. The Department of Justice decided to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/24\/fed-powell-doj-warsh-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drop its criminal probe<\/a>\u00a0into Powell on Friday, causing Sen. Thom Tillis to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/26\/thom-tillis-kevin-warsh-federal-reserve.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">end his block of Warsh&#8217;s confirmation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ECB and BOE both publish their latest monetary policy decisions on Thursday, with economists expecting the central banks to stand pat on their benchmark interest rates at their respective meetings this month.
