Portsmouth boss John Mousinho is a candidate for the Bristol City vacancy, talkSPORT understands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mousinho was on the Robins’ radar before they hired Liam Manning in 2023, and remains highly thought of by the hierarchy.<\/p>\n

Sources have suggested that Steve Cooper, who is currently at Danish side Brondby, has been sounded out about the role.<\/p>\n

Steven Gerrard<\/a> has also been touted amid the news that talkSPORT reported of his interest in the Burnley job<\/a> should Scott Parker leave.<\/p>\n

talkSPORT understands Bristol City believe a high-profile appointment like Gerrard would go some way to easing fan opposition against the club’s hierarchy. <\/p>\n

The Liverpool legend has been away from the touchline since January 2025 when he left Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gerrard also managed Rangers, where he won the 2020\/21 Scottish Premiership title, and Aston Villa.<\/p>\n

He was linked with a return to the former in October after they sacked Russell Martin, but Gerrard chose not to go back to Ibrox<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mousinho success at Portsmouth<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pompey named Mousinho as their head coach in January 2023 after the dismissal of Danny Cowley.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old had previously been in a player-coach role at Oxford United before making the move down to the south coast.<\/p>\n

Mousinho won the League One title, and therefore promotion to the Championship<\/a>, during his first full season at Fratton Park.<\/p>\n

He has guided them away from relegation in back-to-back campaigns since then.<\/p>\n

Pompey secured their spot in the 2026\/27 Championship on April 21, despite being thrashed 5-1 by champions Coventry City.<\/p>\n

Mousinho is under contract at the club until the summer of 2028.<\/p>\n

However, he is planning to hold talks with their owners to discuss increasing his spending power.<\/p>\n

Bristol City set for third manager in a year<\/strong><\/p>\n

Manning departed Ashton Gate last summer after reaching the play-offs, where they lost 6-0 on aggregate to Sheffield United.<\/p>\n

Gerhard Struber was named as his replacement, but spent just nine months in the job before being sacked as they sat 16th in the table.<\/p>\n

Bristol City then made the surprise reappointment of Roy Hodgson<\/a> on a deal until the end of the season.<\/p>\n

The Robins were in contention for another play-off finish, although their form in the second half of the season means they sit 13th.<\/p>\n
