Popular places such as these attract people throughout the year and are known well beyond this region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, those of us who live here know there are far more landmarks that you won&#8217;t find in guidebooks but act as meeting points, markers on long journeys or just talking points about their history and how they got there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Some are familiar sites or are in some form no longer with us, whereas others stand out as a symbol of returning home. We&#8217;ve compiled a list of these places which are bound to stir up memories or debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This list is is by no means exhaustive however. By the 1970s, it became extremely popular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Many will remember it was the setting for the famous \u201cgrab a granny\u201d Thursday nights. An unofficial landmark to many, &#8216;The Pies&#8217; became a key sight for drivers travelling home from outside the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Relating to the Liverpool band The Pies, the group have maintained a cult status across Merseyside as their name has been daubed in feet-high white paint at unusual locations, also the M6, the M62 and on the Mersey Tunnel ventilation shaft. Located on the corner of Renshaw Street and Ranelagh Street, one of its most famous features is a statue of a nude man by Sir Jacob Epstein, which was unveiled for Lewis\u2019s centenary celebrations in 1956.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was built as a symbol of the city\u2019s \u2013 and the store\u2019s \u2013 ability to endure adversity and generations will more likely know it as &#8216;Dickie Lewis&#8217;. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/places-used-meet-friends-liverpool-26515603\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"A meeting point for many,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">A meeting point for many,<\/a> it&#8217;s still in the city centre today.<\/p>\n<p>Littlewoods building<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_The-former-Littlewoods-Building-in-Liverpool.jpg\" alt=\"The former Littlewoods Building in Liverpool\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The former Littlewoods Building in Liverpool(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Littlewoods building on Edge Lane opened in 1938 and was once home to the Littlewoods pools operation run by one of the largest family run businesses in Britain. A common site for locals and commuters driving past, the art deco structure became <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/developers-give-update-littlewoods-building-23144705\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"symbolic of Littlewood\u2019s roaring success.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">symbolic of Littlewood\u2019s roaring success.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The building has lain dormant for the best part of the last two decades but work is now underway to turn <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/inside-littlewoods-building-iconic-clock-29451325\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">it into a film studio.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sgt Pepper Bistro<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_The-old-Sergeant-Peppers-Bistro-at-Smithdown-Place-Penny-Lane-Aug-2024.jpg\" alt=\"The old Sergeant Pepper's Bistro in August 2024\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The old Sergeant Pepper&#8217;s Bistro in August 2024(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Empty since 2003, this former tram stop which was name checked in The Beatles famous song Penny Lane. For years, the art deco period piece was a famous restaurant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The building was originally a tram stop and inspectors\u2019 office, with public toilets added to the back. But a few hundred years away, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/you-know-third-liver-bird-12380126\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"a &#039;third&#039; Liver Bird can also be found.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a &#8216;third&#8217; Liver Bird can also be found.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The bird has been perched on top of the Grade-II listed Mersey Chambers &#8211; built for the Harrison Shipping Line by George Enoch Grayson &#8211; beside St Nicholas Parish Church of Liverpool since 1870.<\/p>\n<p>Greatie Market<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Greatie-Market-first-time-review.jpg\" alt=\"Great Homer Street's Greatie market\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Great Homer Street&#8217;s Greatie market(Image: Paul McAuley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you\u2019re from Liverpool, you know Greatie Market. Long a staple in Liverpool&#8217;s history, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/spent-saturday-morning-greatie-market-25552055\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"it definitely is a landmark in its own right.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">it definitely is a landmark in its own right.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For more than 180 years, Greatie Market has remained at the heart of the city, even after several changes. It runs every Saturday with hundreds of stallholders offering a wide variety of products, from fruit and veg, meats and cakes to flowers, crafts and clothing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Ford Mushroom&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_JS297752453.jpg\" alt=\"The 'Ford Mushroom' off Torrington Drive, Halewood\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The &#8216;Ford Mushroom&#8217; off Torrington Drive, Halewood(Image: Google streetview)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Not far from the Jaguar site in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/halewood\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Halewood<\/a>, formerly the Ford factory, you will find another unofficial landmark which has become known to many as the &#8216;Ford Mushroom.&#8217; To many, it reminds them of something out of a sci-fi film, like a flying saucer. Dominating the skyline of the area, it is actually a water tower.<\/p>\n<p>The Rocket<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_The-Rocket-at-Bowring-Park-Photo-by-Colin-Lane.jpg\" alt=\"The Rocket at Bowring Park\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Rocket at Bowring Park(Image: Colin Lane\/Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s easy to whizz past The Rocket at the end of the motorway on the way into the city centre. But for decades, the pub has been a Liverpool landmark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The pub sits by the vital junction connects the M62 with the A5080 and the A5058 Queens Drive. Based in Old Hall Street since 1973 after moving from Victoria Street, the newsroom is now located a stones throw away in St Paul\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But many workers and commuters still reference it as a place to meet. Many will still walk and drive past the building with its branded logo outside as it has been for years.<\/p>\n<p>The Otterspool Bull<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_140820LGRI_local_landmarks_05.jpg\" alt=\"The bull statue at Otterspool Promenade\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The bull statue at Otterspool Promenade(Image: Colin Lane)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The bull is located near the end of Otterspool Promenade. Over the years it&#8217;s become an unofficial meeting point for those wanting a stroll along the Mersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After the ECHO visited the red concrete monument last year, many readers were debating what the statue actually was. Some insisted it was a Trojan horse while others argued it was a \u201csuper cow potato\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The ambiguous figure dons the sturdy hoofs of a horse, the distinctive hump of a camel and to top it off, a thin yet twirly moustache and goatee reminiscent of Don Diego De la Vega\u2019s alter ego, Zorro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">No one seemed to have a straight answer <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/mystery-solved-sculptor-reveals-what-29137689\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">until the person who made it clarified the situation. <\/a>The statue was created by then-27-year-old Indian sculptor Dhruva Mistry for the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/extremely-dangerous-reckless-actions-festival-28937151\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Liverpool Garden Festival<\/a> in 1984 and moved to its current location on<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/otterspool\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> the prom in 2006.<\/a> The now 67-year-old artist confirmed he had chosen the image of a Sitting Bull to base the statue on, as he was \u201cinspired by its virile strength of the form\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cIt is tantalising, bold and challenging for its scale with most common materials like steel, sand and cement. Some pieces in the Assyrian and Indian section at the British museum were inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Five Lamps<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Five Lamps is a war memorial situated on the corner of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/crosby\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Crosby<\/a> Road North and Great George\u2019s Road. Listed on the memorial are the names of 431 service men and three women who gave their lives in the First World War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is surrounded by three lamp posts, one with one lamp and the other two with two lamps. But names of local landmarks come in all varieties and the weirder ones are often the ones that stick the most.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you were to head to Wirral&#8217;s Nanny Goat Mountains you would have to go to the green space on Naylor Road in Bidston. But a large part of it remains overgrown making it hard to explore.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Hut<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sitting in the shadow of an official landmark, The Green Hut is a chippy found by Leasowe Lighthouse and closed to the beach.
