That’s the only thing that could be a negative.

“From what I’m hearing, there are issues in terms of delays from decision-making from PIF anyway and have been for a while, and they’ve got to sort that out and become more nimble.

“But all this scaremongering about PIF pulling out of sport is not true at all. I just see them as evaluating each investment and saying, that one’s okay, this one isn’t, which makes quite a lot of common sense. So there is a lot of drama about this which I think is unfounded.”

Newcastle register interest in Brighton defender

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, and with a squad rebuild set to take place, Newcastle must be decisive with their decisions in the market.

With Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth both on course to leave Newcastle upon the expiry of their contracts in the summer, and with Kieran Trippier having already confirmed his departure, Eddie Howe will be looking for a new defender this summer.

Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle could look to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, as the 25-year-old prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

Van Hecke has started all but two games for Brighton this season, who are currently on course to qualify for the Europa League.

Don’t Miss a Beat: Your Newcastle Insider Access

Get the full story from St James’ Park and Darsley Park with our dedicated expert hubs:

Updated 24/7 with expert analysis from the heart of Tyneside.

(Credit: Getty, Imago) Tue 28 April 2026 18:45, UK Updated Wed 29 April 2026 13:17, UK Newcastle United’s…

[4100
94,118044,3047,79,16,15
0":"post-926330","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-football","8":"tag-football","9":"tag-keith-wyness","10":"tag-newcastle-united","11":"tag-sports","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
