The long-awaited sequel \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/devil-wears-prada-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_devil-wears-prada-2\" data-tag=\"devil-wears-prada-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>\u201d is targeting a massive debut of $75 million to $80 million from 4,100 North American theaters. Some are expecting ticket sales to near $90 million to $100 million, given the original\u2019s enduring appeal as well as the recent over-performance of \u201cMichael.\u201d Last weekend\u2019s champ \u201cMichael,\u201d a musical biopic about Michael Jackson, was projected to earn $70 million and ended up <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/box-office\/why-michael-beat-box-office-expectations-bad-reviews-1236730917\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/box-office\/why-michael-beat-box-office-expectations-bad-reviews-1236730917\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildly exceeding expectations<\/a> with $97.2 million to start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d should earn another $100 million at the international box office, which would bring global ticket sales to roughly $175 million to $190 million for the weekend. Disney\u2019s 20th Century Studios spent lavishly on the sequel, which was produced for roughly $100 million, not including the worldwide marketing budget. To compare, the first film carried a price tag around $40 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDisney\u2019s investment in more \u201cPrada\u201d looks to be money well spent. \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d is poised to outgross the original\u2019s lifetime haul in a matter of weeks. The first film launched to $27.5 million in North America and ended its theatrical run with $125 million domestically and $326 million worldwide. With endlessly quotable lines (\u201cThat\u2019s all\u201d and \u201cFlorals? For spring? Groundbreaking\u2026\u201d) and a starry cast that\u2019s only ascended on the A-list, \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d has remained a cultural touchstone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMeryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci all returned for \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d along with the original director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. The sequel picks up with Hathaway\u2019s Andy Sachs returning to Runway magazine as a features editor two decades after she worked as the assistant to Streep\u2019s powerful editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Vogue editor Anna Wintour is, of course, the inspiration behind Streep\u2019s character. Though she denied the use of her likeness on the first film, Wintour has embraced her association with all things \u201cPrada\u201d this time around, even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/meryl-streep-anna-wintour-may-cover-2026-interview\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/meryl-streep-anna-wintour-may-cover-2026-interview\" target=\"_blank\">posing on the cover of her magazine<\/a> alongside Streep with the tagline \u201cWhen Miranda met Anna\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d will easily notch the No. 1 spot at the box office. Elsewhere, \u201cMichael\u201d is expected to stay strong with $45 million to $50 million in its second weekend, a roughly 50% to 55% decline. So far, the Lionsgate film has generated $104.9 million domestically and $226 million globally. Meanwhile, holdovers including Universal\u2019s animated \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d and Ryan Gosling\u2019s sci-fi epic \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d should continue to pack in crowds.
