{"id":927056,"date":"2026-04-29T20:17:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/927056\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T20:17:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:17:23","slug":"remembering-raghu-rai-jack-thornell-and-jarvis-rockwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/927056\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Raghu Rai, Jack Thornell, and Jarvis Rockwell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/tag\/in-memoriam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In Memoriam<\/a>\u00a0is published every Wednesday afternoon and honors those we recently lost in the art world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raghu Rai <\/strong>(1942\u20132026)<br \/>Indian photojournalist who captured the nation&#8217;s milestones<\/p>\n<p>Widely known as India&#8217;s most celebrated photojournalist, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/27\/world\/asia\/raghu-rai-photographer-dead.html?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photographed<\/a> Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, among many other notable figures, for a number of newspapers. He was a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who nominated him to join Magnum Photos in 1977. He served on the jury for World Press Photo in the 1990s, and he won the Padma Shri award, one of India&#8217;s highest honors, for his photographs of the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A photograph has picked up a fact of life,&#8221; he once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/photographer\/raghu-rai\/?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, &#8220;and that fact will live forever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ides Kihlen <\/strong>(1917\u20132026)<br \/>Argentine abstract painter<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-72.png\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\"  \/>Ides Kihlen in her Buenos Aires studio (photo Richard Schultz, courtesy Hutchinson Modern &amp; Contemporary)<\/p>\n<p>Her abstract works superimposed scraps of colored paper, geometric forms, and linework on canvas, musical scores, cardboard, and more. She received her first solo exhibition at age 85, at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Buenos Aires, kicking off an international career. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was elegant and demure, and her art was everywhere,\u201d Isabella Hutchinson, founder of Hutchinson Modern &amp; Contemporary in New York, told Hyperallergic. \u201cShe shared the apartment with her creations, and entering that space was magical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/ides-kihlen-abstract-painter-and-argentine-art-legend-dies-at-108\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the obituary<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yair Garbuz <\/strong>(1945\u20132026)<br \/>Israeli painter, activist, and educator<\/p>\n<p>An outspoken critic of Israeli nationalism and advocate for Palestinian rights, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2026-04-29\/ty-article\/israeli-artist-writer-and-publicist-yair-garbuz-dies-at-80\/0000019d-d8a6-d51a-a39f-d9ff45e30000?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worked<\/a> in everything from painting to installations and artist&#8217;s books. He taught at Basis for Art &amp; Culture and various other schools for much of his life. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Gerson <\/strong>(1921\u20132026)<br \/>British photographer of literary icons<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-166072870.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\"  \/>Photographer Mark Gerson, with a selection of his images of writers in Bonhams auction house on April 8, 2013 in London, England. (photo Oli Scarff\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>His portrait <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/obituaries\/2026\/04\/23\/mark-gerson-photography-literature-20th-spark-lessing-waugh\/?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photographs<\/a> of British writers like Evelyn Waugh and Ben Okri graced book jackets and magazine covers, with some becoming enduring images. He often captured sitters in familiar environs, such as playing chess or shopping. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Kurt Gitter <\/strong>(1937\u20132026)<br \/>Avid collector of Japanese art<\/p>\n<p>With his wife, Alice, he <a href=\"https:\/\/emuseum.mfah.org\/catalogues\/gitter-yelen-collection\/menu\/Collector-Statement?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">built<\/a> one of the most significant collections of self-taught American art and Japanese art. He served on the board of what was then known as the Freer Gallery of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and more, and donated hundreds of works to institutions around the world. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Ittai Gradel <\/strong>(1965\u20132026)<br \/>Danish antiquities dealer who exposed theft at British Museum<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2026\/apr\/28\/antiquities-dealer-ittai-gradel-exposed-thefts-british-museum-dies-aged-61?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">academic<\/a> turned antiquities dealer, he alerted the British Museum and police to dozens of museum artifacts available for purchase on eBay in 2021, spawning an ongoing police investigation. In total, he located and returned almost 400 objects to the museum. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Leigh Magar <\/strong>(1968\u20132026)<br \/>Indigo textile artist <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Untitled-22-1.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1790\" height=\"1418\"  \/>Leigh Magar (photo @madamemagar via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C0ZiycURp91\/?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>, screenshot Lisa Yin Zhang\/Hyperallergic)<\/p>\n<p>Through her unique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/arts-culture\/lowcountry-indigo-artist-leigh-magar-dies-57\/article_300f1124-2ecc-49bb-963a-f79d36f1cd41.html?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">style<\/a> that blended generations of craft, she helped reintroduce centuries-old indigo textile traditions in her work. He offered free painting classes at schools and malls both in the nation and abroad, and his work can be found in art galleries across Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Thornell <\/strong>(1939\u20132026)<br \/>Associated Press Photographer<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/photo-gallery\/jack-thornell-ap-photo-gallery-mississippi-e61ba731f405bf88ece5bda6f5ca612c?ref=hyperallergic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won<\/a> a Pulitzer Prize for his 1966 photograph of civil rights activist James Meredith immediately after an assassination attempt.
