Kennedy or Jill Valentine, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/weapons-director-zach-cregger-resident-evil-movie-1236485983\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/weapons-director-zach-cregger-resident-evil-movie-1236485983\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as Cregger aimed to create a new and original story<\/a>. The plot will introduce a new protagonist\u2014a courier delivering a package\u2014who finds himself in the middle of a\u00a0Raccoon City outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The original \u201cResident Evil\u201d was released as a PlayStation game in 1994, but was later made available on several different consoles. There have been more than a dozen sequels and remakes of the games, including this year\u2019s \u201cResident Evil Requiem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere have been six previous \u201cResident Evil\u201d films, beginning with Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez\u2019s 2002 film. Jovovich went on to lead \u201cResident Evil: Apocalypse\u201d (2004), \u201cResident Evil: Extinction\u201d (2007), \u201cResident Evil: Afterlife\u201d (2010), \u201cResident Evil: Retribution\u201d (2012) and \u201cResident Evil: The Final Chapter\u201d (2017). In 2021, filmmaker Johannes Roberts took on the franchise reboot \u201cResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City\u201d as writer and director. The franchise has collectively grossed over $1.2 billion at the global box office.<\/p>\n<p>The latest \u201cResident Evil\u201d film is produced and co-financed by Constantin Film. Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment\u2019s Roy Lee, Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.<\/p>\n<p>Cregger\u2019s credits as a writer-director include \u201cMiss March,\u201d \u201cThe Civil War on Drugs\u201d (both alongside Trevor Moore), \u201cBarbarian\u201d and last year\u2019s \u201cWeapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cResident Evil\u201d will be in theaters on Sept. 18.
