<\/p>\nAn investigation has been launched after a crash between a police vehicle and a motorbike on a motorway sliproad<\/p>\n

A Merseyside Police officer is under criminal investigation after a crash on a motorway slip road left a man fighting for life. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation after a crash between a police vehicle and a motorbike on the slip road at junction two of the M53 on Sunday, March 22.<\/p>\n
It was reported at the time how shortly after 3.15pm officers spotted the motorbike, which was also believed to be uninsured, on Love Lane in Wallasey<\/a>. One man got off the bike and was detained at the scene. The other rider fled into oncoming traffic in the direction of the M53<\/a>.<\/p>\n At around 3.30pm, a police vehicle<\/a> crashed with the bike on the M53 northbound slip road<\/a> at junction two (Moreton Spur). The rider suffered serious injuries <\/a>and was taken to hospital.<\/p>\n The motorway was closed for almost 24 hours following the crash.<\/p>\n In an update from the IOPC today, May 1, it said Merseyside Police has been informed an officer is under criminal investigation following the incident.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the police watchdog said a police helicopter had been tracking the motorbike as it drove the wrong way down the hard shoulder when it was hit head on by the police vehicle.<\/p>\n Having reviewed the evidence available, the driver of the police vehicle is now being investigated for potentially causing serious injury by dangerous driving.<\/p>\n They are also under investigation for possible gross misconduct in relation to the manner of their driving.<\/p>\n In its update, the IOPC said the bike’s rider is no longer in hospital but is continuing treatment for his injuries.<\/p>\n IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “This was a very serious incident which left a man in a critical condition in hospital.<\/p>\n “I am relieved to hear his condition has improved. However, he will continue to undergo treatment for his injuries.<\/p>\n “Given the circumstances, it is important for there to be a thorough and independent investigation so that we can fully understand events leading up to the collision.<\/p>\n “It is important to remember that serving notice on an officer does not necessarily mean that criminal or disciplinary proceedings will follow.<\/p>\n “On conclusion of the investigation, we will decide whether to refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service, or if misconduct proceedings are required.”<\/p>\n The watchdog has gathered footage of the incident as well as obtaining a statement from a police witness.
