Russia to fill Syria\u2019s energy gap<\/p>\n
Russian oil shipments to Syria increased by 75% to ~60,000 bpd <\/b>(barrels per day) in 2026, up from 46,000 bpd <\/b>in 2025, and were shipped almost weekly by a fleet of 21 sanctioned vessels<\/b> using ship-to-ship transfers near Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt to obscure origins. Syria\u2019s domestic output is only ~35,000 bpd<\/b>, down from 350,000 bpd<\/b> in pre-war conditions. Meanwhile, the country\u2019s daily needs range from 120,000 to 150,000 bpd<\/b>, leaving a massive gap that Russian oil fills at a discount to Brent.<\/p>\n
Syria previously imported from Iran; however, shipments were cut off after Assad\u2019s fall in December 2024, and Syria has so far failed to strike alternative deals with Turkey or Gulf states due to weak purchasing power and limited financial integration.<\/p>\n
Economist Karam Shaar warned, \u201cIf the United States were to fail to reach an agreement or settlement with Russia regarding Ukraine, it wouldn\u2019t be a surprise if it told Syria overnight to stop buying these oil shipments.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
