While many undergraduates have their degrees paid for, university tuition fees do need to be paid by some other students, including many taking postgraduate degrees.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"mq2x2\">The Scottish government does cover the cost of up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abertay.ac.uk\/study-apply\/money-fees-and-funding\/scottish-undergraduate-funding\/scottish-fresh-start\/#:~:text=You%C2%A0apply%20for%20tuition%20fees%20through%20the%20Student%20Awards%20Agency%20for%20Scotland%20(SAAS).%20SAAS%20usually%20provides%20you%20with%20up%20to%20five%20years%20of%20tuition%20fees.%20%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five years<\/a> of mainly undergraduate study for full-time students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ssi\/2022\/156\/regulation\/3\/made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordinarily resident<\/a> in Scotland who are studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saas.gov.uk\/guides\/guide-to-undergraduate-funding#:~:text=Tuition%20fees%20if%20you%20study%20in%20Scotland%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Scotland<\/a>, meaning these <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/eligibility-for-home-fee-status-and-student-support-in-scotland\/#:~:text=university%20and%20SAAS.-,Who%20is%20eligible%3F,-In%20general%2C%20to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eligible students<\/a> do not pay tuition fees.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"xp9h1\">Undergraduate tuition fees for Scottish students are typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saas.gov.uk\/about-saas\/stats-2023-24\/policy-background#:~:text=The%20typical%20fee%20rates%20SAAS%20pays%20are%20%C2%A31%2C285%20for%20those%20below%20degree%20level%20and%20%C2%A31%2C820%20for%20first%2Ddegree%20or%20PGDE%20courses.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a31,820 a year<\/a>. Students need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saas.gov.uk\/full-time\/undergraduates\/how-to-apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apply annually<\/a> to the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), an executive agency of the Scottish Government that supports higher education students with information and funding, to have these fees paid directly to their university. Those undertaking a second undergraduate degree or repeating more than one year, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abertay.ac.uk\/study-apply\/money-fees-and-funding\/scottish-undergraduate-funding\/scottish-fresh-start\/#:~:text=What%20if%20you%20dropped%C2%A0out%20in%20year%202%2C%20or%20left%20college%20with%20an%20HND%20and%20want%20to%20start%20a%20new%20four%20year%20degree%3F%20That%20would%20be%20six%20years%20of%20tuition%20fees%20funding%20in%20total%2C%20but%20SAAS%20only%20provides%20five.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would pay fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2ccwb\">Postgraduate students are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentinformation.gov.scot\/students\/higher-education\/funding-your-postgraduate-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also required<\/a> to pay tuition fees, though some may access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentinformation.gov.scot\/students\/higher-education\/funding-your-postgraduate-degree#:~:text=Other%20sources%20of%20funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grants, scholarships or funding<\/a> through other bodies.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"tc7lv\">And those moving to Scotland from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentinformation.gov.scot\/working-in-education\/ruk-tuition-fees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other UK nations<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentinformation.gov.scot\/students\/higher-education\/international-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other countries<\/a>, in order to study their first undergraduate degree are not eligible for free tuition fees.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"i3kwo\">In 2023, a Scottish Government-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/student-finance-wellbeing-study-sfws-scotland-2023-2024-main-report\/pages\/2\/#:~:text=In%202023%20the,)%20in%20Scotland.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commissioned study<\/a> found that in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/student-finance-wellbeing-study-sfws-scotland-2023-2024-main-report\/pages\/5\/#:~:text=Whilst%20the%20majority,time%20paid%20fees.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023\/24 academic year<\/a> some 56% of postgraduate students in Scotland were paying tuition fees along with 12% of higher national and undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"zs39z\">When we asked the SNP about the claim it told us: \u201cThe SNP is proud that we abolished Labour&#8217;s tuition fees, meaning that Scotland is the only part of the UK where undergraduate students can study at university without needing to pay tuition fees.
