Eddie Howe has emerged from a meeting with Newcastle\u2019s Saudi Arabian owners<\/a> confident he retains their support but also acutely aware that such backing is finite, with the manager admitting \u201ca lot is riding\u201d on Saturday\u2019s visit of Brighton.<\/p>\n

Howe will aim to end a run of five straight defeats against Fabian H\u00fcrzeler\u2019s side <\/strong>at St James\u2019 Park and is under no illusion of the significance of the task ahead. \u201cWe need a win,\u201d admitted Newcastle\u2019s manager. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot riding on this weekend for us. You can talk as much as you want but the proof is in how the team performs. I\u2019m under no illusion that needs to be positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howe spent a large part of Thursday locked in discussions with Newcastle\u2019s chair, Yasir al-Rumayyan, who headed a 25-strong delegation from Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) during an annual club review at Matfen Hall Hotel in Northumberland. \u201cIt was constructive,\u201d said Howe, who made a presentation to the owners before facing some forensic questioning. \u201cI was pleased by the level of support given to me but, of course, there\u2019s an understanding that we need to get results.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were challenging conversations, difficult questions; there\u2019s no getting away from that. You\u2019re challenged and probed on certain decisions you\u2019ve made, how we\u2019ve ended up in certain scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

PIF\u2019s decision to withdraw its multibillion dollar underwriting of LIV Golf<\/a> prompted speculation that Newcastle\u2019s owners could also turn the financial taps off at St James\u2019 Park, but Howe was adamant this is not the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe desire is unchanged,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s to get to the top of the Premier League, to try to win as many trophies as possible. I don\u2019t think that will change while the PIF are our majority owners. They are very ambitious.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe owners clearly care so much about the football club. It\u2019s very exciting times ahead for the club, regardless of what happens short term. The long-term vision is clearly there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howe is evidently desperate to remain part of that vision yet tacitly accepts he faces a four-game audition to reassure the board that, after almost five years in charge, he has not lost his touch. Newcastle have lost nine of their past 12 Premier League games and are only eight points above the relegation zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need invigorating,\u201d said Howe. \u201cI\u2019m invigorated. I think you learn a lot from these moments. Difficult runs force you to revaluate everything and improve. Sometimes the most disappointing moments are the times when you improve the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 48-year-old also hinted he might be prepared to relinquish some of the considerable power in player recruitment since taking charge on Tyneside. \u201cIf we can improve how we recruit players I\u2019m all behind it,\u201d said Howe. \u201cI just want the best players at the lowest cost. That\u2019s how the football club needs to work and, if we can find different ways to do that, I\u2019m fully supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he was optimistic he would be Newcastle\u2019s manager next season, Howe replied: \u201cI have to retain that confidence. I don\u2019t think it serves anyone not to have that long term vision \u2026 but we need to win games.
