A mum says a school with ‘bigger problems’ than uniform should focus its attention on those issues, rather than punishing students for not following the dress policy to a tee.<\/p>\n

The woman, who has a daughter in her final year at Reddish<\/a> Vale High School, Stockport<\/a>, says her child has been put into isolation for wearing leggings, which are not part of the uniform.<\/p>\n

She says her 16-year-old would usually wear a skirt, but has a flare-up of eczema – partly due to the stress of her upcoming GCSE exams – and doesn’t want her legs on show.<\/p>\n

With just one term left at school, she says it would be a waste of money to go out and buy school-approved trousers.<\/p>\n

After showing up to school in leggings, the girl has been put in isolation and has been missing key lessons, the mum told the Manchester Evening News.<\/p>\n

“Her eczema has flared up and she doesn’t want to be embarrassed in a skirt,” the woman, who asked not to be named, said. “I don’t think it’s sustainable to buy school trousers with less than 30 days to go.<\/p>\n

“They have taken her out of lessons and won’t let her in them. Reddish Vale is an ‘inadequate’ school, according to Ofsted. I think they have bigger problems than a student predicted 7s and 8s in leggings when the Ofsted report says some students can’t read.”<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old mum-of-two added: “They’re revising in school at the moment as they don’t have study leave anymore. If she’s in isolation it means she’s missing out on key lessons with the teachers. If she’s revising science for example, she needs to be in class with the science teacher.”<\/p>\n

She said her daughter was allowed back in class on Friday (May 1) after agreeing to wear a skirt over her leggings.<\/p>\n

“I just can’t see when exams start next week how this is okay,” she added. “She has worn uniform every day for her entire school life.”<\/p>\n

The school’s last Ofsted inspection report was published in June 2024. The watchdog said the high school was ‘inadequate’ and put it in special measures as a result.<\/p>\n

Inspectors said ‘reading remains a barrier for a considerable number of pupils’ and ‘hinders their ability to access the curriculum’.<\/p>\n

An inspection report added: “The school’s expectations for pupils’ achievement, particularly disadvantaged pupils, are low. There are considerable weaknesses in how well teachers deliver the curriculum. Pupils with special educational needs and\/or disabilities (SEND) are not supported well enough.<\/p>\n

“Furthermore, instability in staffing and high staff absence means that pupils miss out on learning parts of the curriculum. Consequently, pupils’ achievement across many areas of the curriculum is poor.”<\/p>\n

A special measures monitoring inspection by Ofsted last May found ‘leaders have made progress to improve the school, but more work is necessary for the school to no longer be judged as requiring special measures’.<\/p>\n

The report said that in January 2025, new head Darren Moroney had been appointed, as well as a new chair of the board of trustees<\/p>\n

It added: “Leaders at all levels have accepted the weaknesses identified at the previous inspection. The school, the trust and the local governing body have worked swiftly and determinedly to improve the quality of education that pupils receive. Leaders are taking the right actions, in the right order and at the right pace.”<\/p>\n

The school uniform policy states that students must wear a blazer with the RVHS logo, a white shirt, tie, black full length trousers or a skirt with the RVHS logo. Jumpers are optional.<\/p>\n

Pupils can wear an unbranded skirt, it says, but it must be ‘knee-length and non-stretchy material’. The school website makes it clear that there will be consequences for not adhering to the uniform policy.<\/p>\n

It says: “If there is a blatant disregard for the school uniform, following contact with parents\/carers pupils will be given spare school uniform to wear for that day. Where contact cannot be made with home by Pastoral Intervention Managers a pupil may be kept in isolation. This will normally be with their form tutor.<\/p>\n

“All staff are responsible for implementing this policy. The school acts in line with the Equality Act 2010. We have a duty to be sensitive to the needs of different cultures, races and religions and must accommodate their needs.”<\/p>\n

The school has not responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
