Manchester United hosts Liverpool in a contest between English soccer’s two most successful clubs, but the result is unlikely to have much of an impact on the outcome of either team’s season\"Liverpool<\/p>\n

Jamie Carragher has told soccer fans that this weekend’s game between Manchester United and Liverpool is arguably not the “must-watch” game of this weekend’s Premier League action.<\/p>\n

Liverpool<\/a> travels to Old Trafford in a game that is unlikely to have much of an impact on the outcome of either team’s season.<\/p>\n

Both United and Liverpool<\/a> have health cushions inside the top five, and with just four games of the season remaining, Champions League<\/a> qualification is virtually assured \u2013 barring a late season collapse from Liverpool and a late surge from one of the chasing pack.<\/p>\n

Carragher suggested that the low stakes means that United against Liverpool is not must-watch affair that it usually is.<\/p>\n

“United versus Liverpool used to be the must-watch game of the season,” Carragher said in a column for The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“You could argue that it is not even the must-watch game of the weekend this time. The outcome will not be of particular importance for United and Liverpool\u2019s remaining ambition of Champions League qualification.<\/p>\n

For the managers, however, it is meaningful. A win over Liverpool for a United coach will be celebrated as much as any, further underlining Carrick\u2019s credentials for the job.<\/p>\n

“Equally, if Slot ends this season with an away win at United to follow victory at Everton so swiftly, those calling for his head will sound increasingly like they are unwilling to give him another chance, no matter what he does.<\/p>\n

“For both sides, a good finish to the season and victory in a stellar fixture will help to quieten and undermine the sceptics.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Carragher thinks that Michael Carrick is the obvious choice to lead the Red Devils into next season after a brilliant run of results since arriving as the club’s interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January.<\/p>\n

United has amassed 29 points from 39 available under the former midfielder, who also impressed during a brief spell in caretaker charge five years ago.<\/p>\n

“No Premier League or Champions League rivals will be shuddering if Michael Carrick is leading United into next season,” Carragher said.<\/p>\n

“None of the other European giants would have Carrick on their shortlists for the manager\u2019s job, and even United\u2019s supporters will be doubtful they have finally found the natural successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.<\/p>\n

“But as the United board considers its options, Carrick is the ideal choice to assume full control this summer because of what the club needs right here, right now.
