Roy Hodgson concluded his interim tenure in charge of Bristol City with a final-day win over Stoke City at Ashton Gate<\/p>\n

Roy Hodgson insists he “couldn’t be happier” after Bristol City’s final-day win over Stoke City, with the 78-year-old “very satisfied” with the work he’s done during his interim spell at Ashton Gate.<\/p>\n

The Robins concluded the Championship campaign and Hodgson’s tenure in charge with a 2-0 win over the Potters on Saturday lunchtime<\/a>. Goals from Delano Burgzorg and Sam Bell were enough for City<\/a> to claim all three points in front of a sell-out crowd.<\/p>\n

Middlesbrough loanee Burgzorg gave the Reds the lead after just a minute of action, when he pounced on a Viktor Johansson mistake<\/a> to open his account in red and white. It looked as though that early strike would be the difference, until Bell converted from close range two minutes from time.<\/p>\n

While, in the eyes of Hodgson, it was far from the Robins’ best display since the March international break<\/a>, that mattered very little to the former England boss, who was eager to focus on the result, more than the performance.<\/p>\n

“Funnily enough, I didn’t think it was one of our better performances, if I’m perfectly honest,” Hodgson explained after the full-time whistle. “I think probably that a bit of the nervousness and the desire to finish well rubbed off on us all in a way.<\/p>\n

“But, there were some good qualities to the team. I’ve seen us pass the ball better and control games better in some of these previous ones when we’ve actually been very good at doing that at times. Today was less of that, and we were put under pressure by the very talented wingers Stoke have got and the number of crosses they get into the box.<\/p>\n

“I can’t fault the attitude, the desire, the discipline and the willingness of all the players to do what was necessary to get us a result. I couldn’t be happier. Sometimes getting a victory like this is more satisfying than one where it has been fairly easy because you’ve dominated the game from start to finish.”<\/p>\n

With Saturday lunchtime’s win over the Potters, Hodgson has claimed 11 points from his seven games in interim charge. Under the 78-year-old, City have beaten Charlton Athletic<\/a>, Sheffield United and Stoke, but have been beaten by Norwich City and Birmingham City.<\/p>\n

In truth, the back-to-back wins over Easter were enough to banish any slight fears of relegation<\/a> amongst the City faithful. The points added against QPR, Southampton and the Potters since have, however, proved enough to see the Reds finish 12th in the Championship.<\/p>\n

Having been tasked with steadying the ship leading into the run-in, Hodgson has carried out the task given to him by the Robins hierarchy and been awarded with a legacy cap for his efforts over two stints in BS3. He can now head back into retirement happy with his work at Ashton Gate.<\/p>\n

Asked by Bristol Live<\/a> if he was satisfied with his efforts, he replied, “Very satisfied. I think 11 points from seven games, four of which have been away from home, and against teams of very good quality [is a good return].<\/p>\n

“Stoke at the start of the season were racing, Southampton was a tough one, Birmingham have been going quite well in recent weeks, QPR, Charlton, Sheffield United; there’s been no games really where we’ve been handed, if you like, a team which has been struggling or coming to the end of a season in a bad way.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had to fight and work hard against similar quality teams the whole way through. To take 11 points from that, especially with only three games being here, I think we can be more than satisfied.<\/p>\n

“Everyone likes to get a pat on the back,” Hodgson added on his legacy cap. “Everyone likes to hear a kind word, everyone likes to receive praise, and I’m no different.<\/p>\n

“It’s much nicer than having people boo you off the field or accost you on the street to tell you that they don’t think you’re any good. It’s nice when it’s the other way around.”<\/p>\n
