{"id":935497,"date":"2026-05-03T18:33:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T18:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/935497\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T18:33:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T18:33:30","slug":"us-troop-cuts-in-europe-risk-inspiring-russian-aggression-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/935497\/","title":{"rendered":"US troop cuts in Europe risk inspiring Russian aggression \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/topic\/euobserver-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EUobserver voice<\/a> is a daily opinion piece by EUobserver staff writers, published published every weekday evening as a newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Plans to cut American troops in Germany make Russia more dangerous to both Europe and the US, as Donald Trump continues to dismantle Nato deterrence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to cut \u2026 a lot further than 5,000,\u201d soldiers from Germany, where the US has some 40,000 troops, said the US president on Saturday (2 May).<\/p>\n<p>He has threatened similar moves against Italy, Spain, and the UK in revenge for their refusal to join his Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/207269\/meps-set-to-finally-green-light-eu-us-trade-deal-in-thursday-vote\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/207269\/meps-set-to-finally-green-light-eu-us-trade-deal-in-thursday-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hiked tariffs on EU car imports<\/a> in a further blow to transatlantic relations.<\/p>\n<p>And he did it all via off-the-cuff remarks or social media posts, prompting Republican senators and MEPs to voice dismay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is no way to \u200btreat close partners,\u201d said German socialist MEP Bernd Lange, the EU Parliament\u2019s trade committee chair.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most important US deployments in Europe are the 13,000 or so soldiers in Nato\u2019s frontline, Russia-deterrent multinational battalions and in air-defence bases in the Baltic States, Poland, and Romania.<\/p>\n<p>These were a physical guarantee of Nato\u2019s Article V mutual-defence clause, no matter what Trump might say, because if Russia fired on them, the <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/209909\/us-soldiers-more-pro-nato-than-trump-but-europe-can-deter-putin-alone\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/209909\/us-soldiers-more-pro-nato-than-trump-but-europe-can-deter-putin-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US would be forced to fire back<\/a>, as retired Italian admiral Giampaolo Di Paola recently told me.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, Russian president Vladimir Putin has his hands full trying to contain Ukraine\u2019s drone fight-back.<\/p>\n<p>But if Putin won the Ukraine war, Trump pulled US servicemen from eastern Europe, and Russia attacked a Baltic state, it would not end well for Nato, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/europe\/a-wargame-shows-just-how-vulnerable-europe-is-to-a-russian-attack-12dfdbfa\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/europe\/a-wargame-shows-just-how-vulnerable-europe-is-to-a-russian-attack-12dfdbfa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a wargame<\/a> by ex-Nato officials.<\/p>\n<p>Putin might even be tempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/200648\/threat-of-tactical-russian-nuclear-strike-in-europe-growing-think-tank-warns\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/200648\/threat-of-tactical-russian-nuclear-strike-in-europe-growing-think-tank-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fire a tactical nuclear warhead<\/a> at a European military target on one of his hypersonic \u2018Oreshnik\u2019 missiles, if the EU also lost its US nuclear umbrella, according to British defence think-tank the Royal United Services Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe Europeans must take on more responsibility for our own security,\u201d said German defence minister Oscar Pistorius, reacting to the US troop cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump also has his hands full with the Iran war, despite his talk of invading Cuba or Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>But if he thought that pulling out of Europe would help avoid a US clash with Russia, or help him focus on containing China instead, then letting Putin run a rampage into Nato territory might well end in Trump getting dragged back into an even bigger war with Russia in Europe down the line, <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/347\/edgar-buckley-author-of-natos-article-v-on-9-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a retired Nato official previously told<\/a> EUobserver .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine a scenario in which an emboldened Putin fired a nuclear weapon on European territory in order to gain a battlefield advantage in what had, up till then, been a conventional conflict. What would Trump and the US do then? No one knows.
