Sadiq Khan met with the Spanish prime minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez this week, two of Donald Trump\u2019s most outspoken critics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Their talks focused on closer cooperation between London and Spain, the future of the UK\u2019s relationship with the European Union, and the growing challenge of populist politics across Europe.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez made it clear that Spain would \u201cwelcome Britain back into the EU,\u201d a message that resonated strongly with Khan, who has long argued for rebuilding ties with Europe after Brexit.<\/p>\n

According to a source close to the London mayor, it was \u201cincredibly powerful\u201d to hear that Spain would be happy to see the UK back into the EU after Brexit did \u201creal damage to London\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadiq has said it before and he\u2019ll say it again \u2013 Brexit has done real damage to London and is costing Londoners, day in, day out, economically, socially and culturally.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s meeting was about London and Spain standing together \u2013 and sending a clear message that progressive, open, internationalist politics isn\u2019t going anywhere,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

It follows Spain\u2019s recent decision to grant a migrant amnesty, potentially allowing up to 500,000 undocumented people<\/a> to apply for legal status, what S\u00e1nchez has called both \u201can act of justice and a necessity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move charts a notably different course from much of Europe\u2019s tightening grip on migration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Khan, the source said, holds \u201creal admiration\u201d for S\u00e1nchez\u2019s willingness to speak out on global issues, from Gaza to the broader direction of international politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know people by the ideals they defend,\u201d they noted. \u201cWhile others stay quiet, S\u00e1nchez has been prepared to call things out.\u201d<\/p>\n
