{"id":93579,"date":"2025-05-11T20:31:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T20:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/93579\/"},"modified":"2025-05-11T20:31:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T20:31:14","slug":"mans-journey-from-italys-coffee-capital-to-liverpools-north-docks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/93579\/","title":{"rendered":"Man&#8217;s journey from Italy\u2019s coffee capital to Liverpool\u2019s North Docks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liverpool\u2019s \u2018only Italian coffee roaster\u2019 Caffe Riccardo is bringing a community-spirited caf\u00e9 to one of the city\u2019s most intriguing areas<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Make-CIC-Caffe-Riccardo.jpg\" alt=\"This photo shows a Riccardo Porfido standing outside of Make CIC on Regent Street in Liverpool \" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Riccardo Porfido standing outside Make CIC where his cafe is based (Image: Andrew Teebay\/Liverpool ECHO )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Known as the coffee and chocolate capital of Italy, the northern Italian town of Turin is known for its architecture, cuisine and breath taking views of the alps that rise to the west of the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is also the birthplace of Riccardo Porfido, owner of one of Liverpool\u2019s only Italian coffee roasters and the equally unique Caffe Riccardo on Regent Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Today Riccardo\u2019s own expert coffee roasting skills can be found, not in Italy but in the heart of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/vauxhall\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"VauxhallLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Vauxhall<\/a>, having come a long way away from their roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Riccardo first opened the eponymous Caffe Riccardo on Regent Street in 2017 when the area had little by the way of cafes and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But despite a somewhat unlikely location, Riccardo was always keen to make the caf\u00e9 feel like home to anyone coming through its doors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe want our customers to be like friends and family &#8211; not just \u2018next please, thank you, bye\u2019\u201d says Riccardo whose hospitality business was one of the first to come to Regent Street alongside the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/live-music-venue-hoping-bring-29837306\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Invisible Wind FactoryLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Invisible Wind Factory<\/a> which opened in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_CR1.jpg\" alt=\"This photo shows a cafe owner smiling and holding up a cup of coffee\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Riccardo Porfido in front of his hand-made counter (Image: Andrew Teebay\/Liverpool ECHO )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prior to this he was based for a short while on Love Lane, just a few streets away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Holding this piece of the cafe\u2019s history in high affection, a blue painting of the Love Lane railway arches, featuring his previous residence of arch 17, hangs above the cafe\u2019s entrance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cNumber 17 &#8211; like the year we opened here!\u201d Riccardo says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was only when the then-director of social enterprise and creative hub, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/street-so-much-potential-people-30025386\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Make CICLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Make CIC<\/a>, visited Riccardo at Love Lane that things changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cHe was walking his dog and came in for a drink. He liked my coffee and told me I should be in the centre [of Make]\u201d, says Riccardo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Keen to leave the beautiful but cold walls of the railway arch, Riccardo set up home as the central caf\u00e9 in the atrium of the Regent Street creative centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now Riccardo sees many of his customers come through the door from Make\u2019s various resident social enterprises and businesses which include a candle-making business and a sign makers, as well as classes and events which range from wood-workshops to theatre shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s a win-win,\u201d says Riccardo, who worked hard to bring the caf\u00e9 to life from a once empty studio space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt was completely empty. I built everything you see here\u201d, says Riccardo pointing to what is now a large wooden yellow painted counter, complete with a glass cabinet of cannoli, a beer tap and a lever operated espresso machine from Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Adjacent to his hospitality career which included owning a &#8220;successful&#8221; caf\u00e9 in Turin, Riccardo worked in various manual labouring roles including as a mosaicist for world renowned home designers and tilers, Bisazza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Behind the counter sits a small coffee roaster which supplies the caf\u00e9 as well as providing a handful of custom orders to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/caf-town-rising-food-scene-31567107\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"cafes around the cityLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">cafes around the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_coffee-machine.jpg\" alt=\"Riccardo's coffee roaster behind the counter \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Riccardo&#8217;s coffee roaster behind the counter (Image: Andrew Teebay\/Liverpool ECHO )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As we chat, customers enter giving friendly waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe know each other by name. I love that\u201d, says Riccardo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One couple enjoying coffees Riccardo says are residents of the apartments recently developed in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/gallery\/inside-new-tobacco-warehouse-duplex-29242095\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Tobacco WarehouseLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tobacco Warehouse<\/a>. Other regular customers are residents of Make or those living or working in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite the obvious charm of Regent Street\u2019s businesses, the answer to the appeal of the area is more complicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While much of the area\u2019s planned regeneration is still pending, for many businesses the area still presents a much-needed opportunity for larger work spaces at a cheaper price than in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2_unnamed-19.jpg\" alt=\"This photo shows buildings on Regent Street including Make CIC, home to Caffe Riccardo \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Regent Street is part of Liverpool&#8217;s &#8216;Ten Streets&#8217; where millions of pounds worth of regeneration plans are in the works(Image: Andrew Teebay\/Liverpool ECHO )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For Riccardo, while this factored in, there was something more personal that drew him to the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Before Liverpool, Riccardo and his wife lived in London where he spent many of his most fond London days at the city\u2019s St Katharine Docks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But looking for a cheaper place to set up home, they began to search for somewhere new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe\u2019d never been to Liverpool before so we thought why not go there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Unsurprisingly with an existing affection for docklands it wasn\u2019t long before Riccardo succumbed to the beauty held in the north of the city, in particular the nearby <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/reviews\/stayed-titanic-hotel-couldnt-believe-27507702\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Titanic HotelLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Titanic Hotel<\/a> and the impressive architecture of the area&#8217;s iconic warehouses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_unnamed-21.jpg\" alt=\"This photo shows a sign for Regent Street and Caffe Riccardo \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Regent Street can seen an unsuspecting place for such vibrant businesses(Image: Andrew Teebay\/Liverpool ECHO)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Riccardo said: \u201cImmediately we fell in love with Liverpool. The pace is so different to London. And the people are so friendly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is a place for humans, London was a place for numbers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Caffe Riccardo now offers a welcoming space and home-roasted coffee to the area\u2019s growing creative community. A garden area out the front with benches makes it a great spot to sit in the summer.
