Coronation Street is lining up a new direction for Debbie and Carl Webster<\/a> this spring and summer \u2013 as they get a second chance to make their relationship work.<\/p>\n

Debbie and Carl have been at odds for months following the revelation that they’re mother and son \u2013 and Carl certainly hasn’t been shy when it comes to using emotional blackmail to scam money from his mum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With Carl now sticking around on the cobbles following the conclusion<\/a> of Corrie’s big murder week<\/a>, the biggest question for the Websters will be whether he becomes a true ally to Debbie as her dementia progresses.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Digital Spy<\/strong> at a recent Corrie press event, show producer Kate Brooks explained: “Debbie still has dementia, and we’ll see her symptoms start to take hold slightly more, but she’s still very much the Debbie we know and love throughout the spring and summer.<\/p>\n

“Her friendships with the women who she holds so dear are still very much at the front and centre of the show. Her relationship with Ronnie is still really strong, but it’s the relationship with Carl that needs the most repair.”<\/p>\n

“The thing with Carl is that he is such a complex individual,” Brooks continued. “He’s incredibly selfish and self-serving. As his mother, Debbie can see that!<\/p>\n

“So it’s about how those two people can come together and forge a relationship that’s not based on Carl trying to get money. It needs to go back to basics and becomes about the sincerity of their relationship.<\/p>\n

“It takes a while to get there. It does all come to a big head with the fellas in Debbie’s life. It’s about trying to give Debbie that bit of happiness before she goes too far down the line.”<\/p>\n

Corrie is also planning to explore Debbie’s female friendship group \u2013 and the characters in question will be getting huge storylines of their own too.<\/p>\n

“Christina, Glenda, Sally, Debbie, Bernie \u2013 those five women are just phenomenal actors,” Brooks said. “The warmth and the comedy that they all emanate is just contagious! And it won’t just be Debbie at the front and centre. <\/p>\n

“There’s a massive storyline coming up for Bernie further down the line. That will involve Kit and her family dynamic. That’s too far ahead to talk about, but will happen certainly late spring\/early summer.<\/p>\n

“There’s a massive story for Sally and Tim that comes to the fore. It’s a story that tests them as people, tests them as a couple, but tests them as foster parents as well.<\/p>\n

“It’s a bit of a curveball and it comes from slightly left field, but absolutely upends their lives. It’s how they navigate that situation going forward. Sally and Tim are so beloved and I just adore them. It’s seeing them in a slightly different position than what we’ve seen them in before. <\/p>\n

“That story will also dovetail further down the line with a Christina story. Christina and George are a really great, strong couple in the show. It’s keeping those friendships alive.”<\/p>\n

Coronation Street<\/strong> airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on <\/strong>ITVX<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
