{"id":93623,"date":"2025-05-11T20:55:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T20:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/93623\/"},"modified":"2025-05-11T20:55:32","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T20:55:32","slug":"the-murder-capital-see-second-german-show-cancelled-over-palestinian-flag-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/93623\/","title":{"rendered":"The Murder Capital see second German show cancelled over Palestinian flag display"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-murder-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Murder Capital<\/a> have had a second show in Germany cancelled over their intention to have a Palestinian flag on stage with them.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday (May 10), the Irish band saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/watch-the-murder-capital-talk-having-berlin-gig-pulled-for-flying-palestinian-flag-this-is-not-a-political-statement-its-a-humanitarian-statement-3861947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their gig at Club Gretchen in Berlin called off after the venue learned of their plans to display the flag of Palestine<\/a>, something they have done regularly in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Now, frontman James McGovern has confirmed with a social media video that their show on Sunday night (May 11) in Cologne\u2019s Geb\u00e4ude 9 has also been pulled for the same reason.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the band will play an acoustic show in the open air\u00a0of the city\u2019s Rheinpark from 8pm local time, with fans encouraged to bring their own acoustic guitar. \u201cEveryone welcome,\u201d the band have said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A statement about tonight\u2019s show in Cologne. Their show in Munich on May 8, meanwhile, went off without a hitch, and their current tour \u2013 in support of their third album \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/the-murder-capital-blindness-album-review-3840005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blindness<\/a>\u2019 \u2013 continues around Europe later this week.<\/p>\n<p>They are also scheduled to play at two festivals in Germany this summer \u2013 Hurricane Festival on June 21 and Southside Festival on June 22.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining the situation, McGovern said: \u201cWe arrived into Cologne this morning hoping that what happened in Berlin yesterday would be an isolated incident. But tonight\u2019s venue, Geb\u00e4ude 9, has also told us that we cannot have the Palestinian flag on our stage.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve tried everything we can to find another venue for tonight\u2019s show, but it\u2019s been impossible. So we\u2019ll be putting on an acoustic show outdoors in a park somewhere this evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band have signalled they have no intention of changing their policy with regard to displaying the Palestinian flag, with McGovern arguing that it \u201cneeds to be on our stage and needs to be as visible everywhere in the world as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese people are being eradicated, being starved, being bombed, and these war crimes and this genocide is being committed by the Israeli state, and funded and supported by governments around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs having a flag on our stage at a rock show is not a political statement, it is a human reaction to a horrific and unimaginable situation. But this is not history, it\u2019s happening right now, today. We stand forever with the people of Palestine. Free the people of Palestine. Love from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DJe5eQ_qd45\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the band\u2019s Berlin show was cancelled, they gave an impassioned speech outside the venue in which they laid out their point of view \u2013 see the video above and read a transcript <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/watch-the-murder-capital-talk-having-berlin-gig-pulled-for-flying-palestinian-flag-this-is-not-a-political-statement-its-a-humanitarian-statement-3861947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Germany has strict laws against hate speech and antisemitism and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/kneecaps-germany-and-portsmouth-shows-cancelled-as-metropolitan-police-say-there-is-grounds-for-further-investigation-3860041\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kneecap\u2019s scheduled shows in the country were recently cancelled<\/a>\u00a0in the light of their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/kneecap-respond-to-claims-their-coachella-stream-was-cut-over-anti-thatcher-chant-3854362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outspoken comments at Coachella and elsewhere about the Israeli government\u2019s ongoing operations in Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The backlash against Kneecap caused\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/pulp-idles-and-fontaines-d-c-among-dozens-of-artists-to-sign-heavenly-recordings-letter-defending-kneecaps-freedom-of-expression-3859749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countless major artists to sign a letter written by their label Heavenly that stood up for artists\u2019 \u201cfreedom of expression\u201d<\/a>. The letter read: \u201cIn a democracy, no political figures or political parties should have the right to dictate who does and does not play at music festivals or gigs that will be enjoyed by thousands of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Murder Capital, too, have been consistent in their support of Gaza and the Palestinian people,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-murder-capital-share-impassioned-new-single-love-of-country-for-palestine-aid-3823753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donating profits from their single \u2018Love Of Country\u2019 towards aid in Palestine<\/a>. McGovern said the song is about \u201cthe dark side of patriotism and nationalism, and what they become when they are warped and weaponised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, he added: \u201cAcross the world, we are seeing hatred of \u201cother\u201d spreading like a disease. Irishness comes up all the time for us \u2013 more often than not, because we\u2019re feeling pride for our country \u2013 [but also] dismay at the way things are being handled by our government, the way people are being let down and pushed into corners. There\u2019s a lot of that in the world. Not just the people who are committing atrocities, but people who are filled with this hatred of \u2018other\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/the-murder-capital-blindness-album-review-3840005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NME\u00a0awarded \u2018Blindness\u2019 three stars<\/a>, noting: \u201c\u2018Love Of Country\u2019, recorded in a single live take, is a sprawling meditation on the push and pull between patriotism, nationalism and xenophobia, and shows McGovern\u2019s songwriting at its most incisive. If The Murder Capital\u2019s aim was to purge themselves of inertia, then \u2018Blindness\u2019 can only be judged as a success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-murder-capital-biggest-headline-show-2025-dublin-gig-buy-tickets-3822576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The band are set to play their biggest headline show to date at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin on July 19<\/a>, with guests\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/soft-play\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soft Play<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/mary-in-the-junkyard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary In The Junkyard<\/a>.
