{"id":936748,"date":"2026-05-04T08:46:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T08:46:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/936748\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T08:46:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T08:46:26","slug":"holzrausch-designs-frankfurt-penthouse-as-central-roof-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/936748\/","title":{"rendered":"Holzrausch designs Frankfurt penthouse as central &#8220;roof garden&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Munich-based architecture firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/holzrausch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holzrausch<\/a> has completed a two-storey extension to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/penthouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penthouse<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/frankfurt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frankfurt<\/a>, featuring open-plan living spaces that connect with a roof terrace overlooking the city.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Volhard, the founder of the architecture and design platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylepark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stylepark<\/a>, had lived in the building with his wife Patricia for 18 years before moving up a level when the building&#8217;s roof required urgent replacement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322171 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Two-storey extension within a penthouse in Frankfurt\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Holzrausch has completed a two-storey extension to a penthouse in Frankfurt<\/p>\n<p>The couple spotted an opportunity and commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holzrausch.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holzrausch<\/a> to carry out a more comprehensive project that would provide additional space including a kitchen, dining and living area culminating in a full-height opening.<\/p>\n<p>The studio&#8217;s cofounder Tobias Petri, told Dezeen that the brief was to create &#8220;a roof garden in the middle of the city and a bright, open home shaped by unusually precise functional requirements and executed with a characteristically high level of craftsmanship throughout&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322172 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Terrace with sliding doors\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The brief was to create &#8220;a roof garden in the middle of the city&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Wilhelminian-era building&#8217;s original mansard roof was replaced with a two-storey extension, which the architects described as a &#8220;contemporary crown that complements the historic base while clearly expressing a new spatial logic at the top.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The clients wanted to avoid the sloping ceilings and compartmentalised rooms typical of conventional mansard attics, so the new roof structure instead features vertical walls and a cohesive sequence of open-plan spaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322174 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Industrial kitchen\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Industrial elements are balanced against more natural tones in the kitchen<\/p>\n<p>The reconfigured penthouse totals 400-square-metres across three storeys, with the mansard level accommodating the main living spaces and balcony, while the upper floor houses a home gym and office that opens onto an expansive terrace.<\/p>\n<p>Holzrausch worked closely with the clients to develop the architectural concept and an interior scheme that provides a calm, crafted backdrop for their extensive collection of art and furniture.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322176 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Blue-carpeted staircase\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>One of two staircases features a blue-carpeted approach<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aim was a distinct shift in atmosphere at the top of the building \u2013 &#8216;one lift ride&#8217; into openness, light and relaxed, lived-in comfort,&#8221; Petri added.<\/p>\n<p>The material palette was chosen to create a tactile and refined atmosphere, described by the project team as &#8220;arschgem\u00fctlich&#8221;, which translates as &#8220;exceptionally cosy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322179 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_34-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Wood-lined bedroom\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The simple palette is based around materials that will gather patina over time<\/p>\n<p>A key reference was the work of Indian architecture practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiomumbai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studio Mumbai<\/a>, which informed the home&#8217;s warm surfaces, gentle forms and the continuous kambala wood panelling that ties the spaces together.<\/p>\n<p>The simple palette is based around materials that will gather patina over time, including solid wood, terrazzo and brushed stainless steel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322185 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/holzrausch-penthouse-frankfurt-interior-design_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Frankfurt penthouse\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Solid wood and brushed stainless steel feature throughout<\/p>\n<p>This approach is particularly evident in the kitchen, where industrial elements are balanced against more natural tones.
