{"id":937414,"date":"2026-05-04T16:01:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T16:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/937414\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T16:01:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T16:01:18","slug":"eu-ministers-split-over-crisis-spending-as-iran-shock-hits-energy-markets-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/937414\/","title":{"rendered":"EU ministers split over crisis spending as Iran shock hits energy markets \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Divisions are emerging among EU member states over how to respond to the latest energy shock triggered by the conflict in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>European finance ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday (4 May) debated how far governments should go to shield households and businesses \u2014 and who should ultimately bear the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Some governments have already rolled out broad support schemes, while others have limited intervention to targeted aid for vulnerable households and firms.<\/p>\n<p>Against that backdrop, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was invited to press ministers to rein in untargeted measures and focus instead on income support for those most exposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe measures should be tailored and targeted,\u201d Greek finance minister and Eurogroup president Kyriakos Pierrakakis said. \u201cThat is why we are trying to coordinate action and why we have invited the IMF to look into the appropriate response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/208994\/from-germany-to-spain-how-europes-biggest-economies-are-weathering-the-oil-and-gas-shock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/acac336ebe6dcf2578bef7ee4fd02060-600x369.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frugal member states voiced irritation at what they see as a push towards looser spending rules, an idea floated by some member states.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch finance minister Eelco Heinen said as he arrived that support should \u201cremain strictly targeted,\u201d adding that it\u2019s \u201calways easy to spend other people\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, EU governments have committed around \u20ac10.5bn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruegel.org\/dataset\/2026-european-energy-crisis-fiscal-response-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the Bruegel economic think-tank, with roughly 80 percent consisting of untargeted measures such as broad fuel tax cuts and VAT reductions.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch support \u2014 a little under one billion euros \u2014 is significant, but mostly targeted at vulnerable incomes and businesses, according to the think tank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other member states such as Spain, Germany and Ireland instituted mostly untargeted measures aimed at lowering general fuel and power costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/211486\/less-gas-more-sun-and-wind-europe-is-handling-the-new-energy-crisis-better-than-the-russian-invasion-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/TBEN6004-600x400.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In March, Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/208994\/from-germany-to-spain-how-europes-biggest-economies-are-weathering-the-oil-and-gas-shock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> a \u20ac5bn support package, the largest so far.
