Speaking to City AM, Phylactou said: \u201cIn 2023 two of our largest partners flagged the risk of going insolvent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe took a strategic decision to acquire those and we kept those restaurants for nearly a year. We tried to look at which ones we could turn around and fortunately 60 of them were really good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/exact-date-uk-mini-heatwave-31577972\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE Exact date UK mini-heatwave hits next week with 6 counties in England roasted<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe franchised them internally to incumbent franchisees, 13 of them we\u2019ve kept under corporate ownership, but unfortunately 43 of them we\u2019ve had to close. Closing restaurants is never an easy decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThat\u2019s because of the difficult decisions we made back then\u201d, Phylactou said. \u201cHaving people lose their jobs is the last option for us. We tried everything to keep the restaurants open.\u201d He added: \u201cIt\u2019s never an easy decision and something that I wasn\u2019t happy doing, but it\u2019s something that we had to do as a brand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe held on to the restaurants probably longer than we should have to protect the people for as long as we could. And we put a lot of effort into trying those trying to turn those businesses around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cBut unfortunately, they were even the wrong location and the performance of the restaurants was really bad. So there was no business case to keep them open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the start of 2024, Papa Johns owned 118 branches and 406 franchise stores.
