The ‘gifted’ twin siblings of Madeleine McCann are ‘forging their own paths in life’, more than 18 years after the heartbreaking disappearance of their sister, according to a family member.<\/p>\n
Maddie was only three when she vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal on May 3, 2007, triggering a massive international search operation that remains unresolved.<\/p>\n
Over the years, her parents Gerry and Kate McCann have been unwavering in their quest to discover what happened to their daughter – recently stating their “determination to leave no stone unturned is unwavering” – while simultaneously raising their twin children, Amelie and Sean.<\/p>\n
Now 20 years old, the twins are reportedly thriving in their studies at different universities.<\/p>\n
Read more <\/strong>Woman arrested after ‘trying to snatch baby in pram’ near Blackpool seafront<\/a><\/p>\n Their great-uncle, Brian Kennedy, told Mail Online that Kate and Gerry have been very “pleased” with the twins’ accomplishments, both of whom are excelling in athletics.<\/p>\n Amelie, who has participated in cross country and triathlon events, is currently studying at a university in the north of England, reports the Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n Sean, an accomplished freestyle swimmer, is being tipped to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games<\/a> next year – and might even be jetting off to Los Angeles to compete for Team GB at the 2028 Olympics.<\/p>\n He began his swimming journey at a young age, recently sharing on a local website: “At the age of ten, I was selected to swim at City of Leicester, and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles, as well as becoming regional and national champion in my age group.”<\/p>\n He continued: “In order to have achieved this, I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train.”<\/p>\n Sean represented Team Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, successfully reaching the 400 and 1500m Freestyle finals.<\/p>\n In addition, he also has a passion for Open Water swimming and is part of the country’s National Open Water Development Squad.<\/p>\n Despite his rigorous 20-hour weekly training schedule, he is currently pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at a different university than his sister.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, despite the anguish of their daughter’s disappearance, Kate and Gerry have attempted to maintain some semblance of normalcy, with both reportedly returning to work.<\/p>\n Gerry is a professor of experimental medicine and cardiac imaging at the University of Leicester.<\/p>\n Kate, a former GP, returned to the healthcare sector during the Covid<\/a> pandemic and currently works with dementia patients, serving as an ambassador for the charity Missing People.<\/p>\n
