{"id":938266,"date":"2026-05-05T01:23:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T01:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/938266\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T01:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T01:23:23","slug":"ey-downgrades-economic-outlook-for-northern-ireland-on-back-of-iran-crisis-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/938266\/","title":{"rendered":"EY downgrades economic outlook for Northern Ireland on back of Iran crisis \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Economists at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/ey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/ey\/\">EY<\/a> have downgraded the potential for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economic-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economic-growth\/\">growth<\/a> in the Northern Ireland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economy\">economy<\/a> on the back of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/economic\">economic<\/a> forecast from the professional services giant anticipates the north\u2019s economy will expand by just 0.7% in 2026, rising to 1.3% in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prior to the crisis in Iran and the impact on oil prices, EY had projected 1.2% growth in Northern Ireland this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">EY expects the Republic\u2019s economy will still grow at almost four times that rate this year, with modified domestic demand (MDD) forecast to increase by 2.7% this year.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/live-autumn-budget-2024-S2YSBNNOQZBJLFMAAHVSHUBUUA\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Live: Autumn Budget 2024\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1777944199_803_OGWGZFKFDFGD5JWH7BB3IMK7FM.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/dhl-launch-18m-bid-to-relocate-northern-ireland-supermarket-supply-chain-operation-DMJT6RKXLZFMTJWMPDJYZ6OFT4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"DHL launch &#xA3;18m bid to relocate Northern Ireland supermarket supply chain operation\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1777944200_378_ZC2HD7QDPBETZCN7XFIDYOQBJM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">MDD is now considered the best measure for accurately measuring the performance of the Republic\u2019s domestic economy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Unlike gas and electricity customers, Ofgem&#x2019;s price cap does not cover those who heat their homes with oil\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FNONROPWHFOZJCQ7DL3YSQ7GQM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>The price of home heating oil soared by 95% in Northern Ireland during March on the back of the Iran crisis. (Alamy Stock Photo) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That\u2019s mainly the result of the unusual way the presence of major US multinational companies distort the headline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/GDP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/GDP\/\">gross domestic product (GDP)<\/a> figures across the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">GDP is the measure most countries typically use to measure economic output.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The closest thing to measuring GDP in the north is the Northern Ireland Composite Economic Index (NICEI), which is published around four months after the end of each quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/northern-ireland-economy-maintained-modest-growth-in-final-quarter-of-2025-QXWTD6VFMFA6JGHECCRREJSAR4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/northern-ireland-economy-maintained-modest-growth-in-final-quarter-of-2025-QXWTD6VFMFA6JGHECCRREJSAR4\/\">The latest index estimates economic activity increased by 0.2% in the final quarter of 2025<\/a>, leaving it 1.6% up over the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Official data on the first quarter of 2026 won\u2019t be published until the end of June, with the second quarter release scheduled for late September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It means we may not get the full picture of how the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the subsequent surge in oil prices, has impacted Northern Ireland\u2019s economy for another five months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ulster Bank\u2019s monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/pmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/pmi\">PMI<\/a>, which surveys around 200 businesses, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/northern-ireland-jobs-market-returned-to-growth-in-march-but-middle-east-conflict-fuels-inflation-surge-34MRSNT7AZB75BCBVZ6MEFPE2I\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/northern-ireland-jobs-market-returned-to-growth-in-march-but-middle-east-conflict-fuels-inflation-surge-34MRSNT7AZB75BCBVZ6MEFPE2I\/\">indicated the north\u2019s private sector continued to grow in the first quarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But EY is already pricing the inflationary oil price shock into its forecast for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Published this morning, the EY Economic Eye states: \u201cRising fuel prices, Middle East tensions and a changed US tariff landscape are adding cost pressures and uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHigher inflation is squeezing household purchasing power and has shifted the monetary outlook, with the Bank of England now expected to keep interest rates on hold for the time being while public finances remain tight. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Rob Heron EY Managing Partner speaks to The Irish News.&#10;PICTURE COLM LENAGHAN\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FHVA6L6X3JDQ7KBV245GKPD3KI.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"565\"\/>Rob Heron, EY managing partner.
