Birmingham City’s Jay Stansfield celebrates a goal in the Championship<\/p>\n
Jay Stansfield is hoping the injury he sustained in Birmingham City\u2019s<\/a> last match of the season won\u2019t scupper his summer plans.<\/p>\n The 23-year-old forward had to be replaced after 18 minutes of Blues\u2019 1-1 draw with Portsmouth on Saturday<\/a> due to an innocuous injury to his lower right leg after a challenge on Millenic Alli.<\/p>\n Stansfield<\/a> failed to run the injury off and attended Sunday\u2019s awards dinner<\/a> on crutches.<\/p>\n FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK!<\/strong> All the latest Blues news on Birmingham Live\u2019s Birmingham City FC Facebook page<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n \u201cIt was early on and I tried to carry on,\u201d said Stansfield. \u201cI tried and tried but it was getting worse and worse, so we took the decision to come off.\u201d<\/p>\n At least Stansfield has almost two months before he is required to report for pre-season training at the Elite Performance and Innovation Centre.<\/p>\n Blues\u2019 players will now head off on holiday and Stansfield is hoping to enjoy a proper break after playing through last summer to help England win the European Under-21 Championships.<\/p>\n As a result, Stansfield has played 99 matches in the last two seasons with only Christoph Klarer, Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-ho playing more minutes for Blues in the Championship this season.<\/p>\n \u201cI was hoping for a rest but I\u2019ve picked this injury up in the last game of the season,\u201d Stansfield added.<\/p>\n \u201cHopefully the physios are nice enough to let me go away with my family for a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n Blues are due to report for pre-season in late June ahead of the season officially starting on the weekend of August 8 and 9 with a Carabao Cup first round fixture.<\/p>\n The new Championship season will begin on the weekend of August 15 and 16.<\/p>\n Get the latest Blues headlines sent straight to your phone<\/p>\n BirminghamLive has its very own Birmingham City<\/a> WhatsApp community to deliver the latest headlines straight to your phone.
