The result triggered the resignation of the then-Tory Prime Minister <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/david-cameron\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">David Cameron<\/a> and dogged <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/theresa-may\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Theresa May<\/a> \u2019s premiership until her departure from No10 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Since <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Labour<\/a> \u2019s election victory in July 2024, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Keir Starmer<\/a> has attempted to reset relations with the EU that were at rock-bottom after years of fractious negotiations of the UK\u2019s exit from the bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Have your say here and vote in our Mirror readers&#8217; poll<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Deltapoll survey also follows increasing tensions with <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/donald-trump\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u2019s White House over the war in Iran and as he began negotiations to join the EU\u2019s \u00a378 billion (\u20ac90bn) loan scheme for <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/ukraine\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The US President has lashed out at allies for refusing to join his war with Tehran, and renewed his threats to withdraw from Nato in recent weeks. Mr Trump said he would pull 5,000 troops from Germany &#8211; its largest European base &#8211; after clashing with Chancellor Friedrich Mertz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a veiled swipe at the US, Keir Starmer told the European Political Summit this week: \u201cWe cannot deny that some of the alliances that we have come to rely on are not in the place we would want them to be. There is more tension in the alliances than there should be and it\u2019s very important that we therefore face up to this as a group of countries together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Starmer told reporters that Europe must step up commitments to defence and security. He said: &#8220;We work very closely with the US on all issues to do with defence and security and intelligence. We have done for many years, and we do so every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s in our national interest to be closer to Europe,&#8221; he said. \u201cAnd whether that\u2019s the EU loan scheme, which we are discussing with them, that\u2019s of great benefit to Ukraine, but it\u2019s also a great benefit to the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">United Kingdom<\/a> as well, in terms of the jobs that it will create in the United Kingdom. So the benefit there outweighs the cost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Deltapoll interviewed 3,353 British adults online between 26th April and 1st May 2026, including 1,012 respondents in Wales and 1,041 respondents in <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/scotland\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Scotland<\/a>.
