It shows <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/plaid-cymru\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Plaid Cymru<\/a> has jumped ahead of its nearest rivals Reform UK. The poll, for <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/itv\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">ITV<\/a> Cymru Wales, show Rhun ap Iorwerth\u2019s party with 33% of the vote share, ahead of Reform UK at 29%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff-university\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Cardiff University<\/a> has suggested that would mean Plaid Cymru would win 43 seats and Reform would take 34. Once again, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Labour<\/a> is in a distant third and Eluned Morgan, the current First Minister, is again projected to lose her seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Welsh Conservatives have seen a modest increase in their vote share at 9% placing them in fourth which would translate into four seats while the Green Party has dropped into fifth place at 8% which, in this round of results, would only net them two seats in Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf and Caerdydd <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/penarth\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Penarth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, that would be their first ever Senedd representation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Lib Dem leader Jane Dodds would also secure a return to the Senedd, according to this poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The election takes place on Thursday, May 7, and will see 96 politicians elected to the Welsh Parliament. This election there are huge,and important <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/major-changes-2026-senedd-election-33184328\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">changes are coming into force. <\/a>There will be new constituencies and a new voting system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Instead of electing one politician for each constituency, six will be elected from each of the 16 new constituencies via a form of proportional representation. <a aria-label=\"[object Object]Link opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=8cdecf69-0a19-43af-8d50-ed4e2c52d045&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This poll saw 1,125 adults asked questions between April 27 and May 4, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The poll also found people in Wales would prefer the next government to be formed by a single party (44%) instead of a coalition of multiple parties (32%). When asked \u201cIf you had to say, what is the single biggest factor influencing your vote in the upcoming Senedd election?\u201d the most popular answers were \u201cStopping Reform\u201d and \u201cImmigration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When looking at Westminster voting intentions, Plaid Cymru continues to lead with an increase in support for them and Reform, whilst support has lowered for the Greens and Labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">The projected support for each party is as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Plaid Cymru: 33%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Reform UK: 29%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Labour: 12%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Conservatives: 9%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Greens: 8%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Lib Dems: 6%<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Others: 3%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Analysis from Cardiff University suggests that could mean the following seats for each party:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Plaid Cymru: 43 seats<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Reform: 34 seats<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Welsh Labour: 12 seats<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">The Conservative Party: 4 seats<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">The Green Party: 2 seats<\/li>\n<li class=\"LiItem_li-item__IF4xI\">Lib Dems: One<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Which means the Senedd could look like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p Lab 1, Con 1<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sir Gaerfyrddin:<\/strong> Plaid 3, Reform 3<\/p>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s decline:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This chart shows how much Labour&#8217;s support has declined, using YouGov polling for more than 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While voting takes place on Thursday, May 7, the count takes place the following day, during the daytime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dr Jac Larner, from <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Cardiff<\/a> University&#8217;s Welsh Governance Centre said: &#8220;What this final poll tells us is that the broad shape of Thursday&#8217;s result is now fairly clear, even if precise seat totals remain uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Plaid Cymru go into election day on 33%with Reform on 29. Whereas the previous YouGov poll had the two parties tied at 29% each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cPlaid appear to have opened a small gap in the final days but this still remains an incredibly close race.It also highlights how relatively small changes in vote share can have outsized impacts in terms of seat allocation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThat four-point lead is translating into a projected 43 seats against Reform&#8217;s 34. Add Labour&#8217;s projected 12 seats, the Greens&#8217; 2 and the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Liberal Democrats<\/a>&#8216; 1, and the arithmetic for a progressive majority government \u2014 requiring 49 of 96 seats \u2014 looks considerably more comfortable than many anticipated.
