{"id":939980,"date":"2026-05-05T19:50:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/939980\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T19:50:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:50:23","slug":"europe-revamps-its-defence-strategy-in-the-face-of-the-new-world-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/939980\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe revamps its defence strategy in the face of the new world order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are in the midst of <strong>Europe\u2019s Big Week,<\/strong> as <strong>9 May<\/strong> marks the commemoration of<strong> the Schuman Declaration, <\/strong>which gave rise to the historic project that is today\u2019s European Union.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, to whet the appetite, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euroamerica.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>the Euroamerica Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, chaired by the Basque Ram\u00f3n J\u00e1uregui, and <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/portal\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the European Parliament<\/a>\u2019s Office in Spain<\/strong>, headed by Mar\u00eda Andr\u00e9s, held <strong>their traditional annual seminar<\/strong>, which this time could not have had a more fitting title than<strong> &#8220;The Defence of Europe in the Face of the New International Order&#8221;.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Javier Solana, a staunch pro-European with such an impressive track record in <strong>transatlantic relations, <\/strong>did not mince his words. He is the former Secretary-General of NATO and the first EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. \u201cI could never have imagined in my wildest dreams,\u201d he said, sounding both surprised and disappointed, \u201cthat a US president [Donald Trump] would claim that \u2018the European Union was born to annoy and hinder his country\u2019, all the more so given that the true origin of our <strong>EU is the Marshall Plan, designed and named <\/strong>after the American general who championed it to rebuild a Europe devastated by war.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"506\" height=\"675\" alt=\"Javier Solana en el evento\u00a0\u201cLa Defensa de Europa ante el Nuevo Orden Internacional\u201d\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026050510080621604.webp\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\nJavier Solana at the event &#8220;The Defence of Europe in the Face of the New International Order&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was the first wake-up call in a debate that brought together MEPs Nicol\u00e1s Pascual de la Parte (EPP) and Jos\u00e9 Cepeda (PES), alongside General Miguel \u00c1ngel Ballesteros, former director of the Department of National Security and the Institute for Strategic Studies,<strong> moderated by Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Salafranca,<\/strong> first vice-president of the Euroamerica Foundation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whilst all agreed that Europe must<strong> achieve strategic autonomy<\/strong> as soon as possible and strengthen its military deterrent, relying less and less on the American superpower, the stark reality is that \u201ctoday Europe does not have the capacity to defend itself\u201d, a blunt statement by General Ballesteros that none of the speakers dared to contradict.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Above all, we are facing a major problem of <strong>political will, <\/strong>as Ambassador Pascual de la Parte emphasised, pointing to the \u201cenormous amount of money already raised or budgeted to modernise European forces and armaments\u201d. And, like MEP Cepeda, he highlighted Europe\u2019s technological lag, quantified<strong> as an astronomical gap of ten years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" alt=\"Evento \u201cLa Defensa de Europa ante el Nuevo Orden Internacional\u201d\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026050510080683219.webp\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><br \/>\n&#8220;The Defence of Europe in the Face of the New International Order&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A gap so vast that it could not be bridged immediately, even by pouring in vast new resources. Europe, in effect, has been asleep at the wheel and has allowed too much time to pass before realising that leavin<strong>g technological research in the hands<\/strong> of others would weaken it to the point of being sidelined from the key decision-making tables where the world\u2019s future is decided.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the gradual and predictable disengagement of the US from Europe, the latter must accelerate<strong> the &#8220;Europeanisation&#8221; of NATO,<\/strong> that is, assume as soon as possible the leading roles in the various areas that today make up the organisation\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, of those six major areas, four are headed by American generals, compared to just two Europeans. Such a structure must change as soon as possible, although such a drastic change cannot, ultimately, be achieved overnight. In any case, the upcoming NATO summit in July will be crucial for the organisation\u2019s future and its corresponding consequences.<strong> Trump has not yet confirmed his attendance<\/strong> in Ankara, but the general consensus is that his disengagement is irreversible.
