The US is trying to open the Strait of Hormuz as a \u201cfavour to the world\u201d, Marco Rubio has stated.<\/p>\n

He said that the ships stranded in the Gulf were holding essential goods for people in other countries. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s their ships that are stranded, not ours,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re the only ones that can project power in that part of the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

A cargo \u2060vessel has been struck by \u2060an \u200bunknown \u2060projectile within \u2060the \u200bStrait \u2060of Hormuz, \u200cthe United Kingdom Maritime \u200cTrade Operations \u200cagency \u2060said on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

The British marine authority said the environmental impact from \u200cthe \u200bincident \u200cwas \u2060unknown. <\/p>\n

A statement said: \u201cUKMTO has received a report of an incident within the Strait of Hormuz. <\/p>\n

\u201cA verified source reported a cargo vessel has been struck by an unknown projectile. Environmental impact is unknown at time of report. <\/p>\n

\u201cVessels are advised to report any suspicious activity to UKMTO, whilst authorities investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marco Rubio has said a peace deal between \u2060Israel \u200cand Lebanon was achievable, but \u200cthat Lebanese \u2060militant group Hezbollah was a problem.<\/p>\n

The US secretary of state said \u201cwhat everybody wants to see is you have a Lebanese government with the capability to go after Hezbollah and take the Hezbollah part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel and Hezbollah group have continued to trade blows despite a ceasefire that has been in place since 17 April.<\/p>\n

Marco Rubio said \u2060the US had \u2060made some adjustments \u200cto a draft \u200cUN resolution \u200con \u2060the Strait of Hormuz to try and avoid vetoes \u200cby \u200bChina \u200cand \u2060Russia.<\/p>\n

The resolution threatens Iran with sanctions or other measures if it doesn\u2019t halt attacks on ships in Hormuz, stop imposing \u201cillegal tolls,\u201d and disclose the placement of all mines to allow freedom of navigation.<\/p>\n

It also demands that Iran \u201cimmediately participate in and enable\u201d United Nations efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor in the strait to enable the delivery of vital aid, fertiliser and other goods.<\/p>\n

Mr Rubio said: \u201cThe US military is deploying the necessary assets to extend this defensive umbrella over commercial shipping.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said already, this is a defensive operation. I want to reiterate that point, this is important to understand. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf no shots are fired at these ships, no shots are fired at us, we’re not firing shots, but if we’re fired on we will respond, and we will respond with lethal efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking from the White House, the secretary of state told reporters: \u201cThe United States of America holds all the cards. There is no scenario here in which, if they decide to join a ladder of escalation, they wind up getting the last say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time has come for Iran to make a sensible choice,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cThey’re insane in the brain.<\/p>\n

Marco Rubio has said international law does not permit laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no international law that allows you to say, ‘I’m going to put mines in an international body of water and I’m going to blow up ships that don’t listen to us and try to go through.’ That’s what Iran is doing. This is a criminal act, and someone needs to do something about it. Something needs to be done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
