Rangers player Dujon Sterling<\/a> has been fined more than \u00a32,000 and barred from getting behind the wheel for a year after he admitted drink-driving and careless driving.<\/p>\n Sterling, 26, pleaded guilty to driving at \u201cexcessive speeds\u201d on roads including Queen Street, Hope Street and West Graham Street in Glasgow before crashing into a barrier near the M8 on January 4 this year.<\/p>\n Sterling, who had been in the side<\/a> that beat Celtic 3-1 at Parkhead on January 3, admitted a charge of careless driving when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n The footballer<\/a> also admitted driving with 60 microgrammes (mcg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of breath, above the prescribed limit of 22mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.<\/p>\n Dujon Sterling crashed his car after a win over Celtic(Image: Supplied)<\/p>\n Sheriff Mary Shields fined him \u00a3750 for the careless driving charge, \u00a31,500 for the drink driving offence and banned him from getting behind the wheel for 12 months.<\/p>\n Fiscal depute Christa Lindsay told the court that police arrived at the scene in the early hours of January 4 after a witness reported that a vehicle had crashed.<\/p>\n Dujon Sterling(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n She said: \u201cPolice saw the accused outside of the vehicle on his mobile phone. He told them he had not suffered any injuries. He stated that he had lost control and veered towards the protective barrier before crashing into it.<\/p>\n \u201cPolice said that the accused appeared to be in a dazed condition. He was cautioned and required to provide a specimen of breath. He co-operated and failed the roadside breath test and was taken to a police station.\u201d<\/p>\n She told the court that CCTV footage showed Sterling driving in an \u201cuncontrolled manner, narrowly missing a vehicle\u201d in the city centre in the early hours of January 4. The prosecutor said that the footage showed him driving \u201cerratically\u201d and at one stage having to \u201cheavily brake\u201d to prevent a collision.<\/p>\n Sheriff Mary Shields<\/a> asked how long the journey lasted. Ms Lindsay said the distance covered was around 1.5 miles and that the speed limit in the area was 30mph.<\/p>\n She said that while there is no speedometer reading of the vehicle\u2019s speed it was estimated to be travelling \u201cin excess\u201d of the speed limit. Sterling was originally charged with dangerous driving but the charge was amended to one of careless driving.<\/p>\n Ronnie Simpson, representing Sterling, said the footballer<\/a> accepts that he should not have been behind the wheel that night.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cHis employer has imposed a financial penalty on him. He had been celebrating the conclusion of an important day at his place of work. He is under no illusion that he should not have been driving.
