{"id":940655,"date":"2026-05-06T03:10:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T03:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/940655\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T03:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T03:10:17","slug":"southampton-jewish-community-concerned-after-london-knife-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/940655\/","title":{"rendered":"Southampton Jewish community concerned after London knife attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shine, 76, were stabbed during a knife rampage through the streets of the north London suburb last week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Rand was attacked as he left his synagogue, while Mr Shine was stabbed in the neck at a bus stop as he adjusted the traditional Jewish kippah on his head.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Danny Habel, an active member of the Southampton Hebrew Congregation, said security is likely to be increased for worshippers in the city.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Danny Habel (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: \u201cWe\u2019re all shaken. We\u2019re concerned about what we can do, we feel vulnerable.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe have upped security at the synagogue in the recent past, we probably will do that again.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cObviously that\u2019s not the answer, it\u2019s a solution on the short-term basis, but the answer will have to be a change in mentality.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s not as if this has come out of nothing, it\u2019s just over the years the discrimination and hatred have been growing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEvery year I have noticed a difference, so what\u2019s happened now is a progression.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cAs a small local community, we are aware that we have to tighten up on our security, we know each other well, we\u2019re long established which helps in a way with personal security, we can talk to each other.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cSince Wednesday, there have been various suggestions we have made on how to improve structure and security of the synagogue. It\u2019s hard to know what we can do.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  On Tuesday it was announced that Jewish communities across England are set to receive an extra \u00a31 million of Government funding as ministers seek to tackle a rise in antisemitism.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Tim Sluckin, secretary of the Southampton Hebrew Congregation. (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Tim Sluckin, who has been the secretary of the Southampton Hebrew Congregation for 20 years, added: \u201cObviously the events in Golders Green and other anti-Jewish activities are matters of considerable concern to us.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIn addition, we appreciate that there are implications for public policy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cLuckily, as far as I am aware, so far there has been nothing in the Southampton area.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said they have received about a dozen emails from concerned and sympathetic non-Jewish members of the public, including a number of people from the Southampton Council of Faiths.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  These include members of the Sikh community, such as Narinder Singh, trustee of Gurdwara Tegh Bahadur Sahib.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Narinder Singh Roath and Malkeat Singh.
