Claire Nielson, the actress celebrated for her appearance in Fawlty Towers opposite John Cleese, has died aged 89.<\/p>\n

Ms Nielson took on the role of Mrs Hamilton, an elegant guest who arrives at the hotel accompanied by her American husband, in what became one of the sitcom’s most beloved episodes.<\/p>\n

Tributes are pouring in following the news of her passing.<\/p>\n

On X, one fan typed: “Sad news, Claire Nielson was part of the charm that made Fawlty Towers so memorable. Thoughts with her family and fans.”<\/p>\n

Born Claire Elizabeth Isbister in Scotland in 1937, she later adopted Nielson as her professional name. <\/p>\n

The Glasgow-raised performer built a career spanning several decades across television, film and theatre.<\/p>\n

Her appearance in the classic BBC sitcom saw her star opposite Mr Cleese and Prunella Scales.<\/p>\n

The role in the 1979 episode from the show’s second series came despite strong objections from her representative.<\/p>\n

Ms Nielson recalled that her agent had been “furious” about her accepting the part, fearing it would damage her prospects.<\/p>\n

“Back then, pretty young women who did light entertainment stopped being offered dramatic parts but I’d always preferred comedy, so I didn’t care,” she explained.<\/p>\n

By the time she filmed the episode, Ms Nielson had already established herself over two decades in the industry.<\/p>\n

Comedy proved to be Ms Nielson’s forte throughout her career. She became a regular presence in The Two Ronnies sketches, affectionately referring to Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett as “Big Ronnie” and “Little Ronnie”.<\/p>\n

Her Scottish heritage secured her a prominent position in the popular Hogmanay programme Scotch and Wry, performing alongside Rikki Fulton.<\/p>\n

Her CV also boasted a number of dramatic roles. The 1971 film adaptation of Kidnapped saw her take on the character of Barbara Grant, sharing the screen with Michael Caine and Trevor Howard.<\/p>\n

Television appearances included Ghost Squad, Z-Cars, Taggart and Monarch of the Glen, as well as numerous stage productions.<\/p>\n

Ms Nielson grew up in Glasgow, attending Broomlea School before training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Dramatic Art.<\/p>\n

She later honed her skills at Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop in London.<\/p>\n

Her first marriage to actor and producer Dennis Vance produced a daughter, Peggy, before ending in 1966.<\/p>\n

In 1994, she wed her long-term partner, actor Paul Greenwood, known for the BBC sitcom Rosie.<\/p>\n

In her late forties, Nielson secured a place to read English literature at King’s College, Cambridge, enrolling simultaneously with her daughter.<\/p>\n

She believed studying Shakespeare deepened her appreciation of plays she had performed for years.<\/p>\n
