Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the successful return of\u00a0Oschadbank funds and valuables that were seized by\u00a0Hungarian special services earlier this year, calling it\u00a0a\u00a0positive resolution to\u00a0a\u00a0recent diplomatic dispute between the two neighboring countries, he\u00a0stated on\u00a0May\u00a05.<\/p>\n

The assets were confiscated<\/a> in\u00a0March 2026\u00a0during an\u00a0incident in\u00a0which the Hungarian side \u201cunlawfully detained\u201d Ukrainian cash collectors.<\/p>\n

While the bank personnel were released shortly after the initial incident, the financial assets remained in\u00a0Hungarian custody until today.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0returned the people faster, and now the funds and valuables are already on\u00a0Ukrainian territory in\u00a0full,\u201d Zelenskyy stated, describing the resolution as\u00a0an\u00a0\u201cimportant step in\u00a0relations with Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian President publicly commended Budapest for its cooperation in\u00a0de-escalating the situation and finalizing the transfer of\u00a0the assets back to\u00a0Kyiv. \u201cI\u00a0am\u00a0grateful to\u00a0Hungary for its constructive approach and civilized step,\u201d Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0also praised the efforts of\u00a0the officials who negotiated the release of\u00a0both the cash collectors and the bank\u2019s property. \u201cI\u00a0thank everyone on\u00a0the Ukrainian team who fought for a\u00a0fair decision and defended the interests of\u00a0our state and our people,\u201d Zelenskyy concluded.<\/p>\n

Following their release, the cash-in-transit workers accused<\/a> Hungarian security forces of\u00a0torture and severe mistreatment. Gennadiy Kuznetsov, one of\u00a0the detained handlers, reported that the crew was kept in\u00a0handcuffs for over 28\u00a0hours, blindfolded with balaclavas, and completely denied legal or\u00a0consular assistance despite carrying proper European customs documentation.<\/p>\n

Kuznetsov also alleged he\u00a0was subjected to\u00a0\u201cforced medical influence,\u201d receiving unauthorized intravenous injections that severely deteriorated his health before the crew was expelled back to\u00a0Ukrainian territory without their cargo.<\/p>\n
