{"id":942196,"date":"2026-05-06T19:39:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T19:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/942196\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T19:39:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T19:39:32","slug":"embarrassing-uk-labours-rising-star-suffers-major-setback-over-pensions-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/942196\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Embarrassing\u2019: UK Labour\u2019s rising star suffers major setback over pensions \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think Torsten Bell sees himself as being the pension minister for more than about the next 10 minutes,\u201d said David Moffat, executive chair of The Platforms Association.<\/p>\n<p>The industry has expressed plenty of concern about his aspirations. \u201cI always get quite nervous with someone like Torsten Bell as the minister, because he wants to make a name for himself in a space that really you shouldn&#8217;t be able to,\u201d added one industry figure, granted like others in this article anonymity to speak freely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe definitely sees himself in cabinet,\u201d they said. \u201cHe does not see himself being a junior minister for long.\u201d An individual close to Bell said they had never heard him talk about becoming chancellor, but asked: &#8220;What MP hasn&#8217;t thought about if they were prime minister one day?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2266531348-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8163761\"  \/>Bell has worked closely with the current Chancellor Rachel Reeves. | Wiktor Szymanowicz\/Future Publishing via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Betting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.betfair.com\/exchange\/plus\/en\/politics\/uk-budget-specials\/uk-next-chancellor\/next-permanent-chancellor-of-the-exchequer-betting-1.253381184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">odds<\/a>\u00a0currently have Bell as the fifth most likely candidate to become the next chancellor, behind party grandees like Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper.
